Slogans, Scuffle, and Damage: Hindu Activists Disrupts Valentine’s Day Event at NMIMS College

The CSR Journal Magazine

Right-wing activists disrupted a Valentine’s Day celebration at the Narsee Munjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) in Indore, alleging that the event promoted obscenity. The incident reportedly took place during a student-led program aimed at fostering professional skills. Witnesses noted that the activists entered the campus, leading to protests and shouting slogans as the event unfolded.

Damage and Disruption

Authorities at NMIMS have refuted allegations of inappropriate conduct at the event, stating that an “unauthorised group” caused significant damage to campus infrastructure. Visuals from the scene indicated a chaotic atmosphere, with activists allegedly brandishing canes and damaging facilities set up for the celebration. Tannu Sharma, local convener of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad Samrasta Department, contended that the program was, in his view, promoting obscenity among students.

Response from Law Enforcement

As tensions escalated, police presence was required to manage the situation. Deputy Commissioner of Police Shrikrishna Lalchandani acknowledged that while a Valentine’s Day program was taking place, the activists intervened and halted the proceedings. He stated that both students and protesters bore responsibility for the incident, indicating that the college event was organized without prior notification to law enforcement.

Ongoing Investigation

Law enforcement is currently working to identify individuals involved in the vandalism through surveillance footage. The police have confirmed that they will pursue appropriate legal actions based on their findings. A representative from NMIMS reported that between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM, the group disrupted a ‘Bake & Sell’ event, which was part of a larger co-curricular initiative intended to enhance students’ negotiation and commercial skills through hands-on experience.

Safety of Students and Staff

The spokesperson for NMIMS assured that no students or staff members were injured during the confrontation, and that the situation was ultimately managed in a professional manner. The university, through its communication, emphasized the commitment to providing an environment conducive to learning and skill development, despite the disturbances caused by the external group.
