Security Heightened at Jammu & Kashmir’s Jails Amid Terror Threat Alerts: Report

Amid the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 security is heightened in Jammu and Kashmir. Security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir have significantly intensified surveillance.

Furthermore, major protection measures are being taken at prisons. This comes following credible intelligence inputs warning of potential terror strikes on J&K jails. High-risk facilities, including Srinagar Central Jail and Kot Bhalwal Jail in Jammu, have come under heightened security watch. The number of security forces deployed have been increased amid suspicion.

According to reports, these facilities are currently detaining numerous high-profile terrorists and several members of sleeper cells. However, these prisoners are not always directly involved in attacks. These inmates have been known to support terror activities by providing them shelter, logistics, and assisting with movement coordination in the region.

NIA Questions Key Suspects

The investigation is ongoing into the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has interrogated two individuals, Nisar and Mushtaq in connection to the case. Both individuals are suspected of having links to an earlier assault on an Army vehicle. The NIA believes that these two may be terror collaborators.

Meanwhile, the deadly terror attack which occurred on April 22 in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, is suspected to have involved more militants than initially thought. The officials believe some of them may have stayed at a distance to offer strategic cover-fire against security forces.

CISF Reviews Security Setup

The Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) convened a high-level meeting on Sunday. The meeting was organised with senior security officials in Srinagar to evaluate the current threat landscape in J&k. The CISF is now leading efforts to fortify defenses at key detention centers in Jammu and Kashmir. The CISF allegedly assumed control over prison security from the CRPF in October 2023.

Terrorists Possibly Still Hiding in South Kashmir Forests

According to reports, security investigations indicate that several terrorists involved in the attack could still be hiding in the dense forests of south Kashmir. Furthermore, intelligence reports suggest the group is well-equipped and self-sufficient with essential supplies and food.

Meanwhile the authorities continue search operations across J&K, suspecting the presence of additional militants in the region.
