Rashid Levels Zampa’s Record for Second-Most T20 World Cup Wickets

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant milestone, English spinner Adil Rashid has become the joint-second highest wicket-taker in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. This achievement occurred during the semi-final match against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 5. Rashid, aged 38, took two wickets during his four-over spell, concluding with impressive figures of 41 runs for 2 wickets. A pivotal moment came in the 16th over when he dismissed Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav, who was stumped by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.

With this performance, Rashid has now joined Australia’s Adam Zampa in the second spot for the most wickets taken in T20 World Cup history, both having claimed 44 wickets. Currently leading the chart is Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, who has 50 wickets to his name. Following Rashid is Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, with 43 wickets, and Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga, who has accounted for 40 wickets in this format.

India’s Remarkable Batting Display

In the semi-final match, India opted to bat first and put up a formidable total of 253 runs, marking the highest score ever recorded in a T20 World Cup knockout match. Sanju Samson was the standout performer, scoring 89 runs off just 42 balls, including eight fours and seven sixes. Contributions also came from Shivam Dube, who scored 43 runs off 25 balls, and Ishan Kishan, who added 39 runs in a quick 18-ball innings. Towards the end of the innings, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya contributed quick runs, scoring 21 off 7 balls and 27 off 12 balls, respectively, solidifying India’s strong total.

In addition to Rashid’s achievements, England’s Will Jacks also took two wickets in the match, while Jofra Archer secured the crucial wicket of Varma, adding to the team’s bowling efforts.

Competitive Landscape in the Tournament

As of now, Rashid is among the joint leading wicket-takers in the tournament alongside Blessing Muzarabani from Zimbabwe and Shadley van Schalkwyk of the USA, all with 13 wickets each. This level of competition highlights the intense nature of the tournament as players vie for supremacy in this exciting format of cricket.

The winner of the semi-final match between India and England is poised to face New Zealand in the final, which is set to take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. The anticipation surrounding the final match is building, as teams prepare to compete for one of cricket’s most prestigious titles.
