On Teachers Day, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi emphasised the necessity of developing an education system that offers equal opportunities to all students. He expressed this sentiment in social media posts made on September 5, 2026, a day dedicated to recognising the contributions of educators.

Gandhi’s message underscored the critical function teachers play in shaping the lives of students and guiding future generations. He acknowledged their invaluable role in the growth and development of individuals who will shape the nation.

The leader also took a moment to pay homage to Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s second President, on his birth anniversary, which coincides with Teachers Day. This acknowledgment reflected a broader appreciation for the contributions of educators throughout history.

Tributes from Congress Leaders

Alongside Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and general secretary Jairam Ramesh also recognised the importance of teachers in their respective messages. Kharge paid tribute to both the teachers and Dr Radhakrishnan, stating that teachers are essential in shaping young minds and nurturing values that contribute to the future of the nation.

In a post on the social media platform X, Kharge described Radhakrishnan as an eminent philosopher and statesman, whose wisdom continues to inspire generations. He highlighted the foundational role teachers play in society and the significant impacts they have on the development of the nation.

Ramesh reminisced about Radhakrishnan, describing him as a prominent philosopher, brilliant writer, and impactful diplomat. He noted that Radhakrishnan’s dedication to education and institutional development left a lasting impression on the country.

Commemoration of Radhakrishnan’s Legacy

Ramesh specifically recalled the symbolic presence of Radhakrishnan’s portrait in the Rajya Sabha, which served as a reminder of his influential role in Indian politics and education for many years. He lamented that this representation no longer stands in the new architecture of the legislative chamber.

In his posts, Ramesh also shared three notable photographs of Radhakrishnan with prominent Congress leaders and former Presidents. These images included interactions with Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and Vice President Dr Zakir Hussain, reflecting Radhakrishnan’s strong relationships with key political figures. One such photograph from June 1964 featured Radhakrishnan with the newly appointed Prime Minister and K. Kamaraj.

Meanwhile, another from November of that same year showed him alongside Dr Zakir Hussain and Shastri. The third image dated back to 1954, capturing a moment with President Dr Rajendra Prasad and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, illustrating the warm personal connections Radhakrishnan maintained throughout his life.
