PM Modi Affirms Commitment to Rail Network Expansion Following Cabinet Approval of Multi-Tracking Projects

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the government’s dedication to expanding the railway infrastructure across India, following the approval of three multi-tracking projects by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. The total investment for these projects amounts to Rs 9,072 crores. The initiatives include multi-tracking sections between Gondia-Jabalpur, Punarakh-Kiul, and Gamharia-Chandil, aiming to stimulate economic activity in the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand while also enhancing employment opportunities and tourism.

Critical Infrastructure for Economic Growth

The three approved projects are poised to cover eight districts in the aforementioned states, contributing approximately 307 kilometers to the existing network of Indian Railways. These developments are expected to improve connectivity for around 5,407 villages, which collectively house a population of roughly 98 lakhs. The increased line capacity is anticipated to improve mobility, operational efficiency, and service reliability for the rail network.

Focus on Multi-Modal Connectivity

In a statement on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the government’s commitment to railway development. He noted that these projects align with the ‘PM Gati Shakti’ initiative, which seeks to enhance economic growth through improved infrastructure. They are designed to facilitate the seamless movement of people, goods, and services, thereby supporting comprehensive regional development and self-sufficiency.

Tourism and Environmental Benefits

The railway enhancements are set to significantly improve access to numerous tourist attractions, including Kachnar Shiv Temple in Jabalpur, Kanha National Park, and Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, among others. These projects are not only vital for passenger convenience but also for freight transport, including critical commodities such as coal, steel, and foodgrains. The additional capacity generated is expected to facilitate an increase in freight traffic by 52 Million Tonnes Per Annum.

Projected Environmental Impact

The projects are designed with environmental considerations in mind, as rail transport is recognized for being energy-efficient. They are projected to reduce oil imports by 6 Crore Litres and lower CO2 emissions by 30 Crore Kg, which equates to the environmental benefit of planting approximately one crore trees. These developments reflect the government’s commitment to achieving climate objectives while also minimizing logistical costs across the nation.

Strategic Importance for Future Development

As part of Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a New India, these multi-tracking projects represent a significant stride towards ensuring sustainable development. The focus on integrated planning and stakeholder consultations is expected to enhance logistical efficiency, thereby laying the groundwork for future advancements in India’s rail infrastructure. This strategic investment in railway capacity is intended to solidify the foundation for comprehensive economic development across key regions of the country.
