Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar inspected agricultural conditions in the Sonkhed and Loha regions of Nanded district on September 26, 2026. This visit aimed to assess the impact of drought-like conditions resulting from an extended period without rainfall. During her time in the field, Pawar engaged directly with farmers, listening attentively to their concerns regarding the ongoing difficulties they face.

While meeting with local farmers, many of whom included women, she reassured them that the government is committed to providing necessary support in response to their situation. The Deputy Chief Minister expressed her determination to ensure that farmers are not left to cope with hardships alone.

Officials from the Maharashtra Directorate of Information and Public Relations reported that the state government is taking significant steps to address these challenges. Pawar noted that directives have been issued for on-ground evaluations and preparation of detailed reports on crop damage.

Drought Conditions Declared Across 265 Talukas

On September 25, 2026, the Maharashtra government declared drought conditions in 265 talukas statewide, activating the Trigger-1 for the Kharif 2026 season. This decision followed a Government Resolution from the Relief and Rehabilitation Department in response to reports from agricultural authorities highlighting severe rainfall deficiencies that have persisted since June.

The resolution mandated immediate assessments of crop damage, with District Collectors instructed to compile detailed reports using GPS coordinates and photographic evidence of the affected areas. This systematic approach aims to facilitate prompt assistance to farmers detrimentally affected by the drought.

Measures announced by the government included restructuring existing loans, providing concessions on electricity bills for agricultural pumps, and implementing arrangements for drinking water. The government plans to waive or reduce agricultural land revenue, and defer repayment of agriculture-related loans as part of their relief efforts.

Future Support Measures and Recommendations

The government stated that additional relief measures will be introduced, including waiving school examination fees for students and adjusting work norms under the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to better facilitate employment. Ensuring a continuous supply of essential food grains and fodder for livestock is also part of their strategy amid these tough conditions.

With arrangements for water supply and emergency water tankers, the administration will actively address both drinking water shortages and aid to farmers. The government is preparing for consultations to announce other financial assistance for crop losses once assessments are complete.

In light of these developments, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed the establishment of a cabinet sub-committee that will closely monitor the drought situation weekly. This sub-committee, chaired by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, will oversee evaluation efforts and mitigation strategies as the administration navigates through these pressing climate challenges.
