The Rajya Sabha was adjourned until 12 noon on July 27 due to significant uproar concerning the police’s response to students during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ protest held on July 20. Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition, accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of being accountable for the violence directed toward the protesters. He raised concerns regarding the incident in the House, aiming for an immediate discussion, but was met with restrictions based on the existing procedural rules.

Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan stated that discussions on such matters could only be permitted in extraordinary circumstances and required the consent of the entire House. However, Kharge asserted the critical nature of the issue and requested permission for dialogue. He noted, “This is a rare subject,” indicating the gravity of the concerns raised.

As tensions heightened, the Rajya Sabha was once again adjourned until 12 noon amidst the disruptive atmosphere created by opposition members vocalising their dissent. Concurrently, the Lok Sabha also faced adjournment due to similar uproar.

Opposition’s Protests After Police Action

Prior to the parliamentary session, opposition MPs gathered at Makar Dwar to demonstrate against the purported police action taken during the student protests. Various members of the Opposition have initiated adjournment motions in the Lok Sabha and Suspension of Business notices in the Rajya Sabha, expressing a need for immediate discussion regarding the alleged police conduct during the protest focused on the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak matter.

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, intensified his criticisms of the government, labelling the treatment of students as “murderous.” He accused the authorities of employing excessive force to silence student voices, claiming reports indicated that armed force was used against students in Bihar, leading to numerous arrests and FIRs being lodged against them.

He further questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi concerning an earlier commitment made to protect student protesters, stating, “Mr. Modi, where did your promise go that no FIRs would be filed against students?” Gandhi demanded accountability, urging that action be directed against those who had perpetrated violence against students instead of toward the students themselves.

Continuing Political Tensions Over Examination Irregularities

The protests initiated by the opposition coincide with escalating political tensions surrounding alleged irregularities in examinations and the government’s proposed Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. The Opposition’s demands for discussions highlight their insistence on accountability regarding the treatment of students involved in the protests.

In response to the protests and subsequent allegations of governmental overreach, a 37-day-long student agitation at Jantar Mantar was withdrawn after the government committed to addressing the protesters’ concerns. The combination of student activism and political accountability continues to be a focal point as tensions remain high within parliamentary proceedings.

As the situation unfolds, the government faces increasing scrutiny regarding its approach to handling dissent, particularly from the student community. The ongoing protests underscore the broader implications of the government’s actions and policies as they relate to student rights and societal engagement.
