Jairam Ramesh Slams Narendra Modi Over Silence on US-Israel Strikes on Iran

The CSR Journal Magazine

In New Delhi, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed his discontent with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s lack of response regarding the military actions taken by the United States and Israel against Iran. Ramesh characterized Modi’s silence as indicative of “timidity and cowardice.” He made his remarks in light of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s recent criticism of the strikes, labeling them an “extraordinary mistake” and a breach of international law. Ramesh took to social media to highlight the contrast, stating that Sanchez’s courageous position deserves acknowledgment while lamenting Modi’s quietude.

Spanish PM’s Strong Opposition to Military Action

Prime Minister Sanchez reiterated his firm opposition to the military actions, asserting that the Spanish government stands against the escalation of war. He emphasized the principles of his administration, expressing a clear stance: “No to war.” Sanchez’s comments came after the joint military operation by the US and Israel, which further heightened tensions in the West Asia region.

US President’s Remarks on Iran Situation

On the same day, US President Donald Trump declared that there would be no negotiations with Iran unless the country surrenders unconditionally. Trump reiterated the stance that Tehran must capitulate completely before any possibility for diplomatic talks could commence. His statement also hinted at an intention to replace the current Iranian leadership with someone deemed more “acceptable” by the US and its allies, particularly Israel.

Concerns Over Regional Stability

Earlier, Sanchez emphasized that the ongoing conflict poses severe risks, suggesting that it could lead to catastrophic outcomes for numerous lives. He warned against treating the situation as a “game of Russian roulette,” stressing that governments must not endanger millions for the sake of political maneuvers. Sanchez clarified that Spain’s position can be succinctly articulated: an unwavering refusal to participate in warfare that is detrimental to global stability and at odds with national values.

Spain’s Criticism of US-Israeli Actions

In a preceding press conference held alongside German Chancellor, Trump announced that he had directed US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to halt all engagements with Spain, following Spain’s firm disapproval of the recent attacks on Iran. The Spanish government had characterized the bombings as both reckless and illegal, leading to actions such as prohibiting US aircraft from utilizing Spanish naval and air bases for operations targeting Tehran.

Escalation of Military Conflicts in the Region

The remarks come in the wake of a military strike on February 28, which resulted in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several other senior officials. This aggressive action has led to an increase in retaliatory drone and missile attacks from Iran across various countries in the region, raising alarming concerns about a potential wider conflict in West Asia and the implications it holds for international peace and security.
