India to Finalise US Trade Deal Only After Securing Preferential Tariff Terms

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the country will only conclude the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with the United States once it is offered better tariff terms comparable to those available to India’s competitors. Speaking on Thursday, he confirmed that India is prepared to finalise the deal once the US provides a preferential tariff rate that would favour Indian exporters.

Goyal emphasised that the US must present a competitive tariff rate that gives India an advantage over other nations. During a national workshop focused on maximising the benefits of free trade agreements (FTAs), he reiterated the importance of these terms for enhancing India’s export competitiveness.

The minister stated, “As soon as the US can offer us a preferential rate compared to our competition, we will finalise the BTA and announce the final details,” highlighting India’s strategic approach towards its trade relations.

Ensuring Fair Competition for Indian Exporters

Goyal’s remarks underscore India’s commitment to creating a level playing field for its exporters within the US market. Tariff rates play a crucial role in determining the pricing of Indian goods abroad. If competing nations receive lower tariffs, their products may be priced more competitively, thereby attracting more American consumers.

India’s insistence on favourable tariff arrangements reflects its broader strategy to ensure that Indian products do not encounter unnecessary disadvantages in comparison to goods from other countries. This decision is pivotal as it directly influences the potential success of Indian exporters in the US market.

Furthermore, addressing concerns about international competitiveness reinforces India’s focus on maintaining its presence in global trade, particularly given the significance of the US as a trading partner.

Opportunities through Free Trade Agreements

In addition to the US deal, Goyal discussed the broader opportunities arising from India’s trade agreements with various countries. He noted that since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office, India has signed nine FTAs, paving the way for a more extensive global trading presence. Ongoing negotiations with additional countries indicate that nearly 75 per cent of global trade may soon be accessible to Indian producers and exporters.

He urged Indian businesses to leverage these agreements beyond just tariff reductions, encouraging them to use the available frameworks to explore new markets. Goyal’s comments reflect a desire for Indian businesses to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing global landscape.

Moreover, he stressed the necessity for exporters to enhance product quality and scale to remain competitive on the global stage. Continuous improvement in technology and the establishment of robust supply chains are crucial for sustaining and growing India’s export capabilities.

Collaborative Efforts for Enhanced Market Access

Goyal reiterated that collaboration among the government, industries, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) is essential to transform the increased market access into higher export volumes and job creation. He highlighted that consistent adherence to quality standards is vital for improving the competitiveness of Indian products in the international market.

The significance of the forthcoming trade deal with the US cannot be understated, as it represents a crucial component of India’s broader trade strategy. The anticipated preferential tariffs would empower Indian exporters, but the final terms will ultimately dictate the extent of their competitive edge in the American marketplace.

As the situation progresses, India is evidently positioned to anticipate Washington’s tariff offers that will solidify the standing of Indian exporters against global competitors, hence highlighting the ongoing negotiations as a focal point of economic strategy.
