India-South Korea Ties In Focus As Korean War Exhibition Opens In Delhi

The CSR Journal Magazine

On April 21, 2026, India showcased its historical involvement in the Korean War via a photo exhibition titled “Guardians of Neutrality: India’s Korean Mission,” held at the India International Centre in New Delhi. The exhibition emphasised India’s tradition of neutrality, diplomacy, and humanitarian efforts during the conflict, which occurred in the early 1950s.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Cho Hyun, the Foreign Minister of South Korea. The Ministry of Defence of India shared updates via social media, noting the exhibition’s theme and significance in commemorating India’s balancing act between various global powers during the war.

Key officials from both India and South Korea participated in the event, further reinforcing the longstanding relationship between the two nations. Among those in attendance were Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, and Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin.

South Korean President’s Official Visit

The exhibition coincided with a three-day official visit by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, marking his first official trip to India after assuming office. President Lee was accompanied by a high-ranking delegation comprised of ministers, senior officials, and executives from major Korean companies, underlining the depth of bilateral ties.

On April 20, President Lee and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a constructive bilateral meeting in New Delhi. Both leaders expressed a commitment to work together in various spheres to promote prosperity, peace, and cooperation amidst a rapidly evolving global landscape.

During their discussions, they identified specific areas for enhanced collaboration, planning to implement the Joint Strategic Vision to enrich the India-South Korea Special Strategic Partnership over the next five years, from 2026 to 2030. This framework is expected to facilitate deeper engagement across multiple sectors.

Curatorial Insights and Historical Context

The exhibition has been curated by Colonel Divakaran Padma Kumar Pillay (Retd), and it offers insights into India’s multifaceted role during the Korean War. A display note elaborated that India’s participation went beyond the notable humanitarian mission led by the 60th Parachute Field Ambulance.

Emerging from its own challenges following Partition, India utilised its unique position of neutrality to mediate in one of the Cold War’s most volatile situations, where American and Chinese forces were directly engaged. The exhibition presents visual narratives that explore these complex dynamics and India’s humanitarian contributions during this period.

This exhibition serves as a reminder of India’s significant yet often overlooked role in the Korean War, highlighting its diplomatic strategies and commitment to humanitarian principles amidst global tensions. The event’s successful execution underscores India’s historical and ongoing relevance in international affairs.
