INDIA Bloc Announces ‘Save Democracy’ March Starting October 2

The CSR Journal Magazine

The INDIA bloc has declared a nationwide protest initiative following a coordination meeting held in New Delhi on September 30. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced that multiple demonstrations will target the Election Commission, addressing what opposition leaders allege to be threats to democratic structures. The meeting lasted for approximately three-and-a-half hours, during which leaders discussed strategies and resolved to present a united front against perceived injustices.

Kharge reported that the discussions included input from prominent leaders such as Uddhav Thackeray and Hemant Soren, indicating a strong, collective resolve among the diverse parties to address their grievances. He underscored concerns about the weakening of democratic institutions and claimed that the Election Commission has been subject to governmental influence, undermining fair election practices. The collective aim is to re-establish the integrity of democratic systems.

As part of the protest initiative, the INDIA bloc will organise a “Save Democracy March” at the district level, scheduled from October 2 to October 8. Additionally, opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) are set to march to the Election Commission on October 6. A meeting with President Droupadi Murmu is anticipated for the second week of October to present concerns regarding institutional autonomy.

Mamata Banerjee Calls for Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner

Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, speaking during the press conference, reiterated the demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. She characterised him as untrustworthy, alleging malpractice involving Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Banerjee stated that the protests would persist until Kumar steps down and demanded the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Highlighting her assertive stance, Banerjee claimed, “It is publicly known that Gyanesh Kumar is a thief, a dacoit. If Gyanesh Kumar does not resign, this protest will continue for a long time.” She encouraged various segments of society, including students and journalists, to lend their support to the movement for the preservation of democracy.

Banerjee’s remarks have catalysed broader discussions within the opposition, with emphasis on the need for accountability among those seen as eroding democratic values. The unified opposition aims to galvanise public support for their campaign against what they perceive as a degradation of democratic norms.

Rahul Gandhi Affirms Unity Among Opposition Leaders

Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, articulated the INDIA bloc’s commitment to holding accountable individuals responsible for what he described as the destruction of democracy. He stated that members are determined to ensure that those perceived as culpable face consequences, regardless of their political stature. This sentiment reflects a collective belief that protecting India’s democratic fabric is paramount.

Gandhi noted the growing public awareness regarding the alleged manipulation of elections, attributing a sense of urgency to the movement, particularly among younger citizens. He indicated that there has been a notable shift in public sentiment, reinforcing the idea that the issues at hand require immediate action. The opposition’s collective narrative is one of resistance against perceived injustices, and there is a commitment to mobilising public opinion around these concerns.

As the opposition intensifies its efforts, the backdrop is set for a challenging political landscape, particularly with elections in five states approaching in 2027. The ongoing demonstrations and unified opposition stance indicate that the political atmosphere will likely remain contentious in the lead-up to these crucial polls.
