Gujarat CM Launches Lift Irrigation Scheme Benefiting 53,750 Acres in Tribal Villages

In Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the Tapi-Karjan Link Pipeline Lift Irrigation Scheme, which is set to transform agricultural practices in 73 tribal villages across Umarpada in Surat district and Dediapada taluka of Narmada district. This initiative, aimed at aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for Viksit Bharat by 2047, will provide irrigation for over 53,750 acres of agricultural land.

Investment and Future Expansion

The irrigation project, constructed with an investment of Rs 651.08 crore, is based on the infrastructure of the Ukai reservoir. Additionally, the Chief Minister laid the e-foundation stone for an extension to this scheme, anticipated to cost Rs 208.51 crore. Once completed, it is expected to benefit 19,141 acres of land across 29 more villages within Umarpada taluka.

Development Initiatives Unveiled

During the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Patel, joined by Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai and Tribal Development Minister Nareshbhai Patel among others, also launched about 12 development projects amounting to Rs 126 crore in Surat district. Certificates were issued to tribal beneficiaries under the Forest Rights Act, along with other benefits such as housing assistance under the PMAY scheme, and aid for agricultural equipment.

Commitment to Tribal Development

Chief Minister Patel emphasized that the current governance model, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, focuses on inclusive development aimed at uplifting marginalized communities. He explained that the lift irrigation scheme is a significant engineering achievement that raises water through pipelines equivalent to the height of 87 floors to support tribal agriculture.

Government Initiatives for Holistic Growth

The Chief Minister noted that the Vanbandhu Kalyan Yojana has significantly improved access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure in the tribal regions. He highlighted a recent announcement by the Prime Minister, allocating Rs 2 lakh crore for a broad-based development plan for tribal areas over five years. This initiative will particularly enhance education and healthcare services, with an annual budget of Rs 35,000 crore.

Promoting Educational Opportunities in Tribal Regions

Highlighting the government’s efforts, Patel mentioned the establishment of science schools and colleges in tribal areas, which have enabled young individuals to pursue careers in engineering and medicine. Loan assistance is also being provided for tribal youth aspiring to become pilots, fostering higher educational attainment.

Infrastructure Enhancements and Future Plans

Tribal Development Minister Nareshbhai Patel reiterated the administration’s commitment to providing irrigation facilities even in the most remote regions, improving the reliability of water supply for agriculture. He pointed out that modern engineering has allowed water to be delivered where it was previously inaccessible, benefiting farmers throughout the year.

Addressing Irrigation Challenges

Minister of State for Water Supply Ishwarsinh Patel explained that despite excessive rainfall, farmers historically faced water shortages. Significant strides have been made, including constructing small and large check dams that have increased irrigation capabilities across 1.52 lakh acres of land. Additional projects are being planned to further address regional water needs.

Community and Political Support

Local parliamentarians and MLAs present commended the state government’s initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of tribal farmers. They expressed hope that ample irrigation resources would enable diverse crop cultivation and enhance economic conditions within these communities.

Infrastructure Projects and Local Engagement

Plans are underway for an extensive lift pipeline project intended to serve remote areas, projected to benefit approximately 69,000 acres and over 14,000 families. The significant investment in irrigation infrastructure will not only facilitate farming activities but is also seen as a vital step towards sustained regional development.
