At least 14 people from Tinsukia district have died and seven others remain missing after a truck carrying them plunged into a deep gorge in Arunachal Pradesh earlier this week. Officials confirmed the casualties on Thursday as rescue operations continued in the remote region.

The incident took place on the Hayuliang–Chaglagam Road in Arunachal’s Anjaw district, located in the easternmost part of the state.

According to reports, the vehicle lost control while navigating a narrow, steep bend approximately 40 km from Chaglagam, causing it to roll down into the gorge.

Authorities alerted, investigation begins

Tinsukia District Commissioner Swapneel Paul stated that his office received information about the accident around 11 am.

The administration immediately contacted the Anjaw and Teju authorities for confirmation and coordination.

Preliminary investigations suggest two possible causes—overspeeding and poor road conditions along the mountainous border stretch.
Officials are examining both possibilities as part of the ongoing probe.

Local residents lead initial rescue efforts

Residents of nearby villages were the first to reach the crash site and begin rescue work.

Soon after, teams from the police, state disaster response, and the Indian Army’s Spear Corps joined the operation. Multiple rescue units have been deployed to navigate the rugged landscape.

Authorities confirmed that seven people are still missing.

The area’s steep terrain and dense forest cover have made the search especially difficult, but teams remain on site.

Officials said efforts will continue until all missing individuals are found.
