China: Orca Router Releases Uncensored Version Of Alibaba’s Qwen AI

The CSR Journal Magazine

Orca Router has launched an uncensored version of Alibaba’s Qwen 3.8-27B AI model, allowing users to run the software locally on Apple Silicon Macs. This modification enables users to bypass the built-in refusal behaviours that the original model would normally enforce. The modified build has gained attention for its potential to provide responses to prompts that could be deemed harmful or unethical, marking a significant shift in accessibility for developers and researchers.

The uncensored modification is rooted in the model weights released by Alibaba, which Orca Router has altered to create a version that is more flexible in its response capabilities. This move enhances the local usability of Qwen 3.8-27B, allowing it to be deployed directly on compatible Macs without requiring cloud services. The AI hosting platform has made the build available in several formats, including 2-bit, 4-bit, 6-bit, and 8-bit, each varying in memory usage and performance.

Capabilities and Intended Uses of the Uncensored Model

The modified Qwen 3.8-27B model retains the core functionalities of its predecessor while removing restrictions on certain types of requests. According to Orca Router, the primary target audience for this release includes developers, AI researchers, and security professionals engaged in advanced testing and evaluation. The platform aims to support workflows that require expanded capabilities within the AI environment.

The “Aggressive” variant of the new build is designed to generate more straightforward responses across a broader spectrum of prompts. Although users may encounter disclaimers related to the original training of the AI, these do not restrict the generation of the requested responses. The version has drawn scrutiny due to its potential to handle prompts related to unethical or illegal actions, which were typically off-limits for the original model.

Notably, the announcement of this functionality on social media platform X has prompted discussions regarding its implications, specifically in relation to safety concerns. Orca Router maintains that access to the modified model is limited to qualified users, including academics and security researchers, who are conducting serious evaluations and tests.

Hardware Requirements for Running the Model

To operate the Qwen 3.8-27B uncensored model effectively, users must meet certain hardware specifications. The 4-bit version requires approximately 15GB of memory, and it is recommended for systems that possess at least 24GB of unified memory. In contrast, the 6-bit version demands around 22GB of memory, while the 8-bit variant necessitates about 27.5GB, making it suitable for Macs equipped with a minimum of 32GB of RAM.

A lower capacity option, the 2-bit version, reduces memory requirements to about 8.7GB. However, this reduction comes at the cost of significant degradation in output quality. Additionally, users must allocate further memory resources for the operating system and the model’s contextual capabilities.

As the landscape of artificial intelligence development continues to evolve, the introduction of this uncensored model raises questions about ethical uses and programming practices. With the capabilities of Qwen 3.8-27B at their disposal, developers and researchers are likely to explore new avenues for both testing and application in various fields.
