Cabinet Approves Railway Projects Worth Rs 4,474 Crore to Boost Connectivity and Tourism

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned two significant railway infrastructure projects proposed by the Ministry of Railways. The total estimated expenditure for these projects is Rs 4,474 crore. The initiatives involve the construction of the Sainthia-Pakur fourth line and the Santragachi-Kharagpur fourth line, which are designed to augment line capacity and improve the operational efficiency and service reliability of Indian Railways.

Multi-Tracking Strategies to Address Congestion

These multi-tracking projects are expected to streamline operations significantly and reduce congestion on existing lines. They align with the vision of a New India as articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aiming to empower local communities through comprehensive development, thus widening employment and self-employment opportunities in the region.

Focus on Integrated Planning for Enhanced Connectivity

The projects are a component of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan that prioritizes enhancing multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency through integrated planning and collaboration with stakeholders. The railway expansions will facilitate seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods, and services across a broader network.

Impact on Five Districts Across West Bengal and Jharkhand

Covering five districts in the states of West Bengal and Jharkhand, these initiatives will extend the existing Indian Railways network by approximately 192 kilometers. The upgraded infrastructure will positively impact around 5,652 villages, which collectively house a population of 14.7 million residents.

Boosting Rail Connectivity to Tourist Attractions

The enhancements in rail capacity are also forecasted to facilitate improved access to numerous prominent tourist destinations in India, including Bolpur-Shantiniketan, Nandikeshwari Temple, Tarapith, Patachitra Gram, Dhadika Forest, Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary, and Rameshwar Kund.

Economic Benefits from Freight Traffic Augmentation

The newly approved projects are critical for the transport of various commodities, which include coal, stone, dolomite, cement, gypsum, iron and steel, food grains, and containers. The capacity augmentation is anticipated to lead to an increase in freight traffic by approximately 31 Million Tonnes Per Annum.

Environmental Considerations and Energy Efficiency

As an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient mode of transportation, the railways play a vital role in fostering climate goals in the country. The capacity enhancements are expected to reduce oil imports significantly by 6 crore liters and lower carbon dioxide emissions by 280 million kilograms, a reduction that is comparable to the planting of 10 million trees.
