Kalpana Chawla: ‘A Journey from Earth to the Stars’

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting paid tribute to Indian-origin NASA astronaut Kalpana Chawla Monday. On the occasion of her birth anniversary, the ministry said, “Kalpana Chawla was India’s daughter who dared to dream beyond stars”.
Kalpana Chawla, born on March 17, 1962, in Karnal, Haryana. Kalpana was the first woman to earn an aeronautical engineering degree from Punjab Engineering College. Her passion for flying took her to NASA, where she made history as the first Indian-born woman to go to space.
However, as we all know every inspiring journey has a tragic ending. Kalpana lost her life on February 1, 2003 In 2003, during her second space mission. The Columbia shuttle disintegrated during re-entry, just 16 minutes before landing.

Chawla’s Journey

Chawla’s journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College in 1982. She later moved to the US, earning a Master’s and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. She joined NASA in 1994 and flew her first space mission aboard Columbia STS-87 in 1997. Her second mission, STS-107, ended in tragedy in 2003.

A Tomboy from Heart

Despite her success, Chawla remained grounded. A tomboy in her childhood, she was passionate about rock music and flying. Kalpana then fell in love with Jean Harrison, a flying instructor and married him in 1983. It was because of him, she learned how to fly a plane.
Not just that, Chawla mentored young Indian students. She invited young bright girls from her school to NASA’s summer program from 1998 she hosted 14 girl students until her demise. This initiative continues today, keeping her legacy alive.
NASA posthumously honored her with the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the NASA Space Flight Medal. Scientist Dr. Narottam Sahoo highlighted her journey, saying, “From Karnal to the cosmos, her story proves that no dream is too big.”

Politicians pay Tribute

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi also honored her, stating, “Remembering the first woman of Indian origin in space, Kalpana Chawla, on her birth anniversary. Her courage, determination, and passion continue to inspire millions to dream beyond boundaries and reach for the stars.”
Dr Narottam Sahoo, a scientist at the Gujarat Council on Science and Technology paid tribute to Chawla stating, “Remembering Kalpana Chawla on her birth anniversary — an icon of STEM exploration and a symbol of inspiration for dreamers, scientists, and explorers. From Karnal to the Cosmos, her journey reminds us that no dream is too big, no sky is too far when fueled by curiosity and perseverance. We celebrate her legacy by empowering young minds to explore, innovate, and reach for the stars”
Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition, Rajya Sabha, in a post on X wrote, “On her birth anniversary, we remember Kalpana Chawla, the pioneering Indian-born female astronaut who significantly elevated India’s global standing in space exploration. Her legacy serves as a powerful symbol of both female empowerment and gender equality, and she remains a perpetual source of inspiration for millions”.

National Manuscripts Mission

Gyaan Bharatam Mission –

Asiatic Society Of Bengal

Big opportunities in the food processing industry for farmers, women, and entrepreneurs

The Food Processing Industry Policy-2023, introduced by the Yogi government, is emerging as a key driver of economic growth, women’s empowerment, and increased farmer income in Uttar Pradesh. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government is committed to ensuring the effective implementation of this policy, enabling entrepreneurs, self-help groups, and farmer-producer organizations to maximize its benefits.

35% – 50% Subsidy on Project Cost

To encourage the establishment of food processing units, the policy offers a 35% to 50% subsidy on project costs, with a maximum grant of ₹10 crore. Additionally, it serves as a boon for rural women entrepreneurs, providing up to 90% subsidy on solar power projects up to 75 KVA.
Other entrepreneurs can also receive up to 50% subsidies to set up their ventures. This initiative fosters economic growth and marks a significant step toward women’s empowerment, particularly in rural areas.

Financial assistance to Women

The Food Processing Industry Policy will provide maximum financial assistance to women to set up food processing units, the government is helping them become self-reliant while creating local employment opportunities within their communities.
In order to ensure widespread awareness and participation, the Yogi government has directed officials to actively engage with SHGs, farmer organizations, and entrepreneurs, encouraging them to apply for the scheme. Furthermore, public awareness campaigns are being conducted at various levels to promote the policy effectively.

The PM-FME Scheme

Farmers stand to gain immensely from this policy. Under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro food Processing Enterprises(PM-FME) Scheme, farmers in Uttar Pradesh can receive a grant of up to 35% (maximum ₹10 lakh) of their project cost.
This initiative will allow them to process their agricultural produce rather than sell it raw, thereby increasing their profitability. The government aims to prevent wastage of farm produce and ensure that farmers receive fair market prices for their products. Expanding the food processing industry will strengthen the agriculture-based economy and create new employment opportunities for local youth.

Entrepreneurship Opportunities

The Yogi government is also fostering an entrepreneurial culture and attracting new investments in the food processing sector. It provides investors with all the necessary resources and facilities, making Uttar Pradesh a favorable destination for setting up industries.
An online application system has been launched through the Nivesh Mitra portal to streamline the process and ensure interested entrepreneurs can easily access the scheme’s benefits. Additionally, all approval procedures have been simplified under the Single Window System, minimizing bureaucratic hurdles for investors.

Yogi Govt’s Commitment

The Yogi government has called upon public representatives, social workers, and responsible citizens to promote this scheme and encourage farmers and entrepreneurs in their communities to take advantage of it.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding the food processing industry and empowering women. By strengthening the food processing sector, the state government is accelerating economic progress and positioning Uttar Pradesh as India’s leading hub for industrial growth.

Tamil Nadu BJP Leaders Detained in Connection with TASMAC Protest

On March 17, 2025, several key BJP leaders, including Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai and former Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, were arrested by Chennai police ahead of a protest against alleged financial irregularities in the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC). The protest aimed to highlight a claimed Rs 1,000-crore corruption scandal within the state-run liquor agency, which has been under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Annamalai was stopped about 1 km from his home in Akkarai and detained while attempting to head toward the protest venue in Egmore. Soundararajan was arrested at her residence in Saligramam, where she had gathered her supporters before the demonstration. Other senior BJP leaders, including Mahila Morcha President Vanathi Srinivasan and BJP MLA Saraswathi, were also detained at different locations across the city as they tried to head towards the protest. Police had set up barricades and deployed additional personnel to prevent the protest from taking place.

ED Raids Reveal Manipulated Tender Processes and Bribery in TASMAC

The protest followed a series of raids by the ED, which has uncovered evidence of widespread corruption involving TASMAC, liquor distilleries, and bottling companies. According to the ED, several tender processes were manipulated, with transport contracts worth Rs 100 crore allegedly awarded to bidders who did not meet basic eligibility requirements. The investigation further alleges that distilleries funneled unaccounted cash through bottling companies and bribed TASMAC officials in exchange for inflated orders.
Annamalai, who had publicly announced the protest, condemned the actions of the government and accused the police of suppressing dissent. “Is it because we planned this protest in advance that you are acting so cowardly? What will you do if we protest without notice?” he said after his arrest. Soundararajan also voiced her concerns, stating she was arrested directly from her home as she prepared to join the protest and demanded that she be taken along with her supporters.

Excise Minister Denies Allegations, Calls ED Raids Politically Motivated

The ED’s investigation, which began with raids on March 6, has raised serious concerns about the financial operations within TASMAC, particularly regarding inflated expenses, fake invoices, and kickbacks tied to the liquor trade. Tamil Nadu’s Excise Minister, Senthil Balaji, denied the allegations, calling the ED’s actions politically motivated. He further stated that the corruption, if any, was related to bottling firms outside TASMAC, with no involvement from the state government.
Amidst the political tension, AIADMK leader Edappadi Palaniswami has also weighed in, alleging that the fraud could be much larger, possibly amounting to Rs 40,000 crore, fueling the growing controversy surrounding the issue. The arrests and the ED’s findings have further deepened the divide between the ruling DMK and opposition parties in the state.

Adani Vidya Mandir empowering underprivileged students

Adani empowering underprivileged students
Meera is a bright young girl from a small village in Gujarat. Quality education was a distant dream for Meera because of her family’s acute financial constraints. But when she was selected to join Adani Vidya Mandir (AVM), her world changed for the better. She flourished in an environment that nurtured her talents and ignited her passion for learning.
Today, Meera is pursuing a degree in engineering, a testament to the opportunities and support provided by AVM.
Similarly, Ravi belongs to a fishing community in Krishnapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Before joining AVM, Ravi’s future seemed bleak, limited to the traditional occupation of his family. However, AVM’s holistic education system, which emphasised critical thinking and life skills, allowed Ravi to dream big. He excelled in his studies and was encouraged to pursue his keen interest in science. Now, Ravi is a scholarship recipient at a prestigious university, studying marine biology and aspiring to bring sustainable fishing practices to his impoverished community.
These heartening life-altering stories show how AVM schools are bringing about transformation — one child at a time. By giving free, good education, these schools are not just lifting children out of poverty. These institutions are on a noble path of making future leaders and thinkers. The benefits spread good cheer to the students’ families and communities, reflecting the cherished goal of Adani Foundation of empowering communities.
Ensuring no child misses out on good education due to lack of money, AVMs offer underprivileged children the opportunity to realise their potential and can look forward to a rosy future. AVMs have emerged as a beacon of hope, values and community transformation.
Equipped with modern classrooms, science and computer labs, libraries and sporting facilities, these institutions aim for all-round growth and development of both body and mind. The use of technology, including Generative AI, and rigorous teachers’ training demonstrate the Foundation’s commitment to a progressive and inclusive learning environment.
Each AVM is strategically located to serve disadvantaged communities. For the tribal population in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja, rural learners in Ahmedabad, and children of fishing communities in Gujarat’s Bhadreshwar and Krishnapatnam, these schools are a vital resource. They cater to students from families with low annual incomes, focusing on those who might not otherwise get access to good education.
Currently, AVMs are a ray of hope for over 3,500 underprivileged students across the country.
