Family of Youth Found Dead in Kashmir Stream Demand Inquiry

Kashmir

The family of the 23-year-old, Imtiaz Ahmed Magray, whose body was recovered from a stream in the Kashmir valley by the army, demand an investigation into the matter. This demand is supported by political leaders from both the National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party of the state. The family alleges that Magray, who was picked up by the army some days ago, was killed while in custody.

Meanwhile, the police claim that the man jumped into the river while leading authorities to a terrorist hideout.

The deceased was a resident of Kashmir, Kulgam.

Politicians Speak

Magray’s death has attracted political attention. Health and Education minister of the state, Sakina Itoo, visited Magray’s family on Sunday and called for further investigation.

“It is unfortunate that an atmosphere of fear has been created. I want to request LG Sahib- Imtiyaz Ahmed was taken from his house, and his body was recovered; There should be a judicial enquiry into it so that the truth comes out,” it said.

“His family also went to the camp and was told that he would be released soon,” Itoo added.

Former chief minister and PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti, also commented on the incident and said, “Yet another body has been recovered from a river in Kulgam, raising serious allegations of foul play. Local residents say Imtiyaz Mare was picked up by the army two days ago, and now mysteriously his body has surfaced in the river.”

I have no information about Governor’s report to the MHA: Mamata Banerjee on Murshidabad violence

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said she has no knowledge about the report submitted by Governor CV Ananda Bose to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) regarding the recent communal violence in Murshidabad district.

The CM, who left for Murshidabad for a two-day visit also stated that she has no idea about the governor’s mention of the possible implementation of Article 356 in the state. Banerjee, who left for Murshidabad on Monday afternoon, said she could have visited the riot-hit district earlier, but chose to wait until the situation had normalised.

Stating that the situation in violence-hit Murshidabad has stabilised, Mamata Banerjee said, “I have no information about Bose’s report to the MHA. The Governor’s health is not okay. Let us pray to God for his speedy recovery.”

Quizzed about why she did not visit the riot-hit district earlier, the chief minister told reporters, “I could have visited Murshidabad earlier, but if there is no peace and stability there, we should not go and disturb. Stability has returned to Murshidabad long back. Today, I am going there.”

Bengal Governor submits report to MHA on Murshidabad, flags radicalisation concerns

Following recent communal disturbances in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, Governor Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose has submitted a comprehensive report to the central Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The report expresses concern that “radicalisation and militancy” represent an escalating danger to the state’s law and order situation.

The Governor contended that the violence seemed “premeditated” and faulted the state administration for inaction despite apparent warning signs. His report also voiced apprehension about the unrest potentially spreading to adjacent districts. It urged the central government to consider “constitutional options” to bring back normalcy and bolster public confidence in the legal system.

The governor also suggested several measures in the aftermath of violence that claimed the lives of at least three people, including a man and his son, and left several injured. The riot occurred amidst anti-Waqf (Amendment) Act protests.

Mention of Article 356 in Governor’s report sparks political row

The Governor’s report generated political friction due to its mention of Article 356, which permits the imposition of President’s Rule. As per this Article, President’s Rule can be imposed if any state fails to comply with all directions given by the Union on matters it is empowered to

Although a senior official clarified that the Governor had not advised its immediate use, referencing this provision as a potential measure drew strong objections from the governing Trinamool Congress (TMC).

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh described the report as “politically motivated” and akin to fulfilling a “political assignment.” He also questioned the Governor’s silence on the expanded operational zone of the Border Security Force (BSF), now extending 50 km into the state.

Conversely, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) welcomed the Governor’s submission. BJP MP Shamik Bhattacharya stated, “We appreciate the Governor taking the situation seriously. The Centre must now determine the next steps.”

Mamata Banerjee to hold review meeting in Berhampore

Mamata Banerjee is expected to hold a district review meeting in Murshidabad’s district headquarters Berhampore later in the day. “Tomorrow, I will visit violence-hit Dhuliyan and give compensation to people whose houses and shops were damaged,” the CM expressed.

Trinamool stands with Centre on matters of national security: Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee also stated that her party, the Trinamool Congress, stands with the central government on matters of national security in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack. “Our party is with the government on issues related to internal and external security,” she told the media.

West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose Flags Radicalisation Concerns to Centre After Murshidabad Unrest

Kolkata: Following recent communal disturbances in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, Governor Dr.

Article 356 Mention Ignites Political Row

The Governor’s report generated political friction due to its mention of Article 356, which permits the imposition of President’s Rule.

Governor Recommends Central Forces, Inquiry Commission

Within his report, Governor Bose outlined several potential responses to the violence’s aftermath:

Bringing in central forces or BSF personnel to border districts.

Forming a commission of inquiry to examine administrative shortcomings.

Developing comprehensive legislation enabling central intervention in law and order if a state fails to manage the situation.

The Governor specifically pointed to Murshidabad, Malda, and Uttar Dinajpur as districts at high risk, citing their demographic makeup and worsening communal friction.

Violence Described as “Systematic,” Aimed at “Cultural Erasure”

After touring the areas impacted by the riots, Governor Bose characterized the events as aiming for “cultural erasure.” He described the suffering endured by specific communities as “systematic” attacks intended to undermine their identity, calling the violence an uncommon and “grave violation of human rights” in recent history.

The disturbances in Murshidabad broke out following demonstrations against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, which was officially announced on April 8. The conflict resulted in three fatalities and necessitated a temporary halt to internet access in the area.

State Response Criticised for Poor Coordination

The Governor pointed to a “woeful lack of coordination” between administrative bodies and law enforcement, suggesting they were “either unwilling or incapable” of suppressing the violence. He asserted, “The state was clearly aware of the imminent threat but failed to act decisively.”

Report Warns of Deepening Political Polarisation

In his analysis, Governor Bose warned that West Bengal’s political environment is increasingly influenced by religious polarisation. He suggested that both the ruling party and the opposition are exploiting community identities for electoral advantage.

He argued that the TMC’s portrayal as a defender of minority interests has not successfully alleviated communal unease. “The divisions are so entrenched that even assurances from the Chief Minister have failed to stem the tide,” Bose wrote.

He projected a further decline in the law and order situation as the 2026 Assembly elections draw nearer, anticipating increasingly communal political language.

Mixed Reactions from Other Opposition Parties

While the BJP endorsed the Governor’s actions, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury described the report as “very general,” noting that Article 356 was only suggested as a final measure. CPI(M) MP Bikash Bhattacharya dismissed the report entirely, calling it “frivolous” and a “political gimmick.”

Investigation Update: Four Arrests Made

Meanwhile, ongoing investigations into the violence have led to four arrests by the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF), including the primary suspect in a double homicide associated with the Murshidabad riots.

Pakistan Tests Fatah Missile Amid Military Drill and Regional Tensions

The Pakistani military conducted a successful Fatah surface-to-surface missile test as part of its Exercise Indus military drill on Monday. The missile reaches 120 kilometers during its flying. The surface-to-surface missile Fatah achieved a successful test flight as the Pakistani military completed its second test launch in two consecutive days following regional tensions, especially with India.

The military authorities stated that the training launch functioned to test new technical features of the missile by verifying its enhanced targeting accuracy and advanced navigation capabilities. The purpose of this exercise was to test both the readiness of frontline units and the entire missile system’s operational capabilities.

Top military officials led the launch together with strategic experts from Pakistani institutions who provided oversight throughout the operation. General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee along with Army Chief General Asim Munir were informed about the results before extending appreciation to the participating teams for their work.

Pakistan Tests Abdali Missile Two Days Earlier

In a related development, the Abdali surface-to-surface missile system was tested just two days earlier. That missile, with a longer range of 450 kilometers, is also equipped with advanced guidance systems. Both launches underscore a focused effort by Pakistan’s military to enhance its precision-strike capabilities and readiness levels.

Based on a statement from the military’s public relations wing ISPR the recent missile testing forms a strategic defense program for establishing credible deterrence capabilities. These trials demonstrated the Pakistan Army’s dedication to defending national sovereignty through operational superiority against possible external aggression.

Scientists and engineers working with Pakistan’s strategic programs were also present during the launch. Their involvement further emphasised the integration of defense research and military operations in ensuring continued improvements in national defense systems.

Missile Tests Raise Eyebrows Amid Indo-Pak Tensions

Although the ISPR maintained that the launches were part of routine exercises, the timing of the tests has drawn attention. The back-to-back missile demonstrations have come at a time when diplomatic relations between Pakistan and India remain tense, raising concerns about regional stability.

The tests, conducted under the Ex Indus exercise, not only reflect the operational capabilities of the Pakistan Army but also serve as a signal of its preparedness and intent to respond effectively in case of any provocation.

India Shuts Baglihar Dam Gates, Flow to Pakistan Reduced by 90%

In a significant move India has drastically curtailed the flow of water to Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 tourists. After shutting off the Indus water treaty India has curtailed the flow of water from the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab River.

This move has significantly reduced the downstream discharge by up to 90%. Furthermore, the officials cited the need for de-silting and maintenance operations. They also mentioned the need to acknowledge strategic motivations linked to national security concerns. All this follows the recent Pahalgam terror attack.

Kishanganga Project Next in Line

Not just that, India is further preparing to restrict flow from the Kishanganga hydroelectric project on the Jhelum River. This dam is located in the Gurez Valley, it will reportedly soon undergo scheduled maintenance work. During the maintenance work the downstream flow will be halted entirely.

Furthermore, both Baglihar and Kishanganga have previously drawn objections from Pakistan. These were under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) signed between India and Pakistan in 1960.

Indus Waters Treaty Suspended

Meanwhile, India’s decision to suspend the 64-year-old Indus Water Treaty follows the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, most of them tourists. Among the deceased 25 were Indian nationals and one was Nepal national.

The move for suspension of IWT coincided with Pakistan’s test of a surface-to-surface ballistic missile. The move was accompanied by additional punitive measures, including a ban on Pakistani ships docking at Indian ports. Closure of Attari border check post and vacating all the Pakistani nationals from India.

Hydropower Expansion in J&K

Amid the ongoing tensions, India has accelerated work on four major hydropower projects on the Chenab and its tributaries. These include Pakal Dul (1,000 MW), Kiru (624 MW), Kwar (540 MW), and Ratle (850 MW).

The projects are expected to be operational by 2027–28. All these major hydro projects will collectively generate over 10,500 million units of electricity annually.

India Prioritising Water Utilisation

In order to enhance the water supply to northern states, the officials from Jal Shakti Ministry confirmed ongoing coordination with the Union Home Ministry. Furthermore, engineers from NHPC are actively monitoring these operations. This move aims to ensure that Indian water resources are maximised, especially with the IWT now in abeyance.

Baglihar Dam
Baglihar Dam
