Bengal Cabinet Approves Dedicated ATS, Anti-Narcotics Force In Significant Move

The CSR Journal Magazine

The West Bengal Cabinet has taken significant steps to enhance law enforcement measures by approving the establishment of a dedicated Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and an Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF). This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held on Thursday, aimed at addressing pressing issues related to terrorism and drug trafficking within the state.

The ATS will operate under the West Bengal Police, with a specific focus on countering terrorist activities and subversive actions. The government has allocated resources for 461 permanent posts within the squad, alongside five contractual roles for specialists in digital data analysis, cyber surveillance, and technical support, according to official statements.

Furthermore, the establishment of four new ANTF police stations is set to occur in locations including Durgapur, Malda, Kharagpur, and Nadia. In total, the Cabinet approved the creation of 591 new positions across various levels in law enforcement and administration to bolster the activities of the anti-narcotics team.

Focus on Cyber Surveillance and Digital Tracking

Officials emphasised that the newly formed ATS will concentrate on monitoring the digital footprints of individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activities and terrorist affiliations. The unit aims to enhance cyber surveillance capabilities and expedite counteroperations through the integration of modern technology.

This decision arrives amid heightened concerns regarding organised crime, drug trafficking, and potential terror activities within West Bengal. According to sources from Nabanna, the rise in digital platforms being exploited by criminal and extremist factions indicates a need for more specialised law enforcement entities.

The Cabinet’s actions signal a proactive approach in adapting to the changing dynamics of crime, which now heavily involves digital methodologies and networks. The government’s commitment to combat these growing challenges reflects an urgent need for strategic law enforcement enhancements in the state.

Administrative Changes and Recruitment Plans

In addition to the formation of the specialized units, the West Bengal Cabinet has also authorised the creation of a rural police outpost situated at Suryapur within the Baruipur police district of South 24 Parganas, which will include 19 new posts. This addition aims to strengthen policing in rural areas, enhancing security and response times to incidents.

Moreover, the Cabinet approved 68 new positions for the State Commission for Women, intended to reinforce efforts in addressing cases related to violence against women. Another 57 posts have been approved for the commission that tackles institutional corruption, highlighting the government’s commitment to various crucial social issues.

With these approvals, the Adhikari government is anticipated to initiate recruitment processes and develop the necessary infrastructure for both the ATS and ANTF. The emphasis on increasing manpower and resources within these specialised forces aims to fortify West Bengal’s capability to respond effectively to incidents of terrorism, organised crime, and drug trafficking in the region.
