Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has established a memorandum of understanding with Bellatrix Aerospace, aiming to jointly design and manufacture satellite systems focused on the very low Earth orbit (VLEO) segment. This partnership seeks to leverage BEL’s extensive experience in mission-critical electronics alongside Bellatrix’s expertise in satellite propulsion, according to an announcement made on Thursday.

Focus on Very Low Earth Orbit

The collaboration specifically targets VLEO, which encompasses orbital altitudes ranging from approximately 150 km to 450 km above the Earth’s surface. Satellites positioned in this zone can enhance imaging resolution, decrease communication latency, and lower launch costs. However, operating in VLEO necessitates advanced propulsion systems to mitigate atmospheric drag.

Indigenous Capabilities and Strategic Missions

The partnership aims to create integrated satellite solutions suitable for both strategic and civilian applications in space missions. This cooperation is intended to bolster indigenous capabilities in satellite platforms tailored for VLEO operations. BEL emphasizes that this agreement signifies an initiative to merge the manufacturing strengths of established public sector entities with the nimbleness and innovative spirit of emerging deep-tech startups in India’s space sector.

Leadership and Innovation

The memorandum was signed between BEL’s general manager Rashmi Kathuria and Bellatrix Aerospace CEO Rohan M Ganapathy. Leaders from both firms expressed optimism that this collaboration would accelerate innovation and aid in the development of homegrown satellite systems designed for future space missions.
