Amazon Think Big Science Carnival: Navi Mumbai Students Showcase STEM Innovations

The CSR Journal Magazine

The seventh edition of the Amazon Think Big Science Carnival took place at the CIDCO Exhibition Centre in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, on March 6. The event brought together students from municipal schools to showcase their science and technology projects aimed at addressing real-world issues. Supported by Amazon and implemented by the Learning Links Foundation, this initiative engaged over 12,000 students from schools operated by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation over a period of five months.

Selection Process Highlights Innovation

The program culminated in a grand finale where selected teams exhibited their working prototypes and concepts based on themes like “STEM for Sustainability” and “Tech for Good.” Organisers stated that the selection involved multiple phases, starting with approximately 90 student teams presenting their projects during a three-day Mini Science Carnival. After these presentations, a panel of industry experts, government representatives, and educators shortlisted the top 20 teams for the final event.

Engaging Activities to Foster Learning

The carnival included various interactive activities, such as a STEM quiz competition and a robo race, designed to promote analytical thinking, technical skills, and teamwork among participants. More than 2,500 students attended the event, which featured hands-on learning sessions and interactive exhibits conducted by organisations like Amazon Future Engineer, SeadNXT, Museum of Solution, Pi Jam Foundation, and Pluto Drone.

Support from Key Figures

Nikhil Pingle, Chief Operating Officer at Learning Links Foundation, expressed gratitude to Amazon for their support and recognized the collaboration with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. He observed that seeing students present their innovative ideas highlights the importance of creating opportunities for young learners. Pingle encouraged students to maintain their curiosity and continue to utilize STEM to solve real-world challenges.

Encouragement for Future Innovators

Anurag Khilnani, Director of Planning & Delivery for Data Centers in the APAC region at Amazon, shared his enthusiasm for the students’ ability to transform ideas into practical solutions. He also acknowledged the contributions of schools, educators, and programme partners in nurturing student innovation. The organisers noted that the primary goal of this initiative is to foster scientific thinking and problem-solving skills among school students while promoting the application of technology to address social and environmental issues.
