Air India Introduces ‘Basic’ Fare for Domestic Routes

Air India has announced the launch of a new ‘Basic’ fare option for select domestic routes, altering its traditional service model. This new pricing strategy gives passengers the chance to book tickets at a lower cost by opting for fewer included services. Notably, complimentary meals, which were previously standard on domestic flights, will no longer be provided, although passengers will still receive complimentary tea or coffee during their journey.

According to the Tata Group-owned airline, the initiative is aimed at enhancing customer choice and control over travel expenses. The introduction of this fare aligns with a broader trend in the aviation industry, where airlines are increasingly segmenting their services. This approach permits travellers to select only those features they value, potentially reducing overall costs for budget-conscious individuals.

The Basic fare will be available exclusively in Economy Class and is designed to accommodate travellers seeking lower fares by relinquishing certain amenities. Under this fare structure, passengers are entitled to a checked baggage allowance of 15 kg and a cabin baggage allowance of 7 kg.

Reasons Behind the Implementation of the Basic Fare

Air India has described the introduction of the Basic fare as part of its commitment to providing more flexible options for travellers with varying needs and budgets. The airline noted that not every passenger requires an all-inclusive fare, and the Basic fare exists as a viable alternative for those wishing to save on ticket costs.

The airline has characterised this move as a ‘pro-consumer approach’, enabling customers to pay solely for the services they require. The Basic fare continues to support the airline’s strategy of aligning with evolving market trends, as more airlines adopt unbundled pricing to offer lower initial fares while maintaining full-service options for others.

By refining its fare families, Air India aims to meet the needs of current customers better, ensuring they can select the pricing tier and included services that best fit their preferences and travel requirements.

Differences from Existing Air India Fare Options

The Basic fare represents the fourth tier of pricing options in Air India’s domestic operations, following the existing Value, Classic, and Flex categories, which were introduced as part of an overhaul of the customer experience in 2024. Each of these existing categories provides certain bundled benefits, including meals, which will be absent from the Basic fare.

Passengers can expect a tiered system, where the range of included benefits increases as they progress from Basic to higher fare classes. This structure allows travellers to select the option that best matches their financial preferences and desired services.

Additionally, Air India has clarified protocols concerning changes to flight schedules. If a passenger has pre-ordered a meal and is subsequently moved to a different flight, the airline will automatically transfer the meal to the new booking. Should the replacement flight not be able to accommodate the meal, a full refund will be issued.

Booking and Future Plans for the Basic Fare

Currently, the Basic fare can only be booked through Air India’s direct channels, including its website, mobile app, and customer service. This initiative is being tested as a pilot programme, allowing the airline to gather customer feedback and responses during this trial period.

The Basic fare may attract travellers who prefer travelling light and do not require meals during flights, primarily focusing on securing the lowest possible ticket prices. However, customers are encouraged to compare their options thoroughly, as a slightly higher-priced Value fare may include additional benefits that offer greater value based on individual needs.

This launch marks a significant step in Air India’s ongoing transformation strategy, aiming to enhance personalised travel options while increasing its competitiveness in the budget travel segment. The airline’s focus on customer preferences underscores its commitment to adapting to the modern travel landscape.
