Afghan Cricketers Condemn Pakistani Airstrikes on Kabul Hospital that Killed over 200

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prominent Afghan cricketers Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi have publicly condemned the alleged Pakistani airstrikes that reportedly struck a hospital in Kabul, leading to significant civilian casualties. Following the attack, both athletes took to social media to express their shock and sorrow. Afghan authorities have stated that a Pakistani airstrike targeted the Omar Addiction Treatment Hospital late on Monday night, resulting in devastating loss of life and injuries.

Rashid Khan, who captains Afghanistan’s T20I team, expressed deep sadness regarding the civilian casualties. In his statement on X, he emphasized that attacks on civilian infrastructure are indefensible under any circumstances. He stated, “I am deeply saddened by the latest reports of civilian casualties as a result of Pakistani airstrikes in Kabul.” He highlighted that any assault on civilian targets—deliberate or accidental—constitutes a grave violation of international law.

Rashid added, “Targeting civilian homes, educational facilities or medical infrastructure, whether intentional or by mistake, is a war crime. The sheer disregard for human lives, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, is sickening and deeply concerning.” He called upon international organizations, including the UN, to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure accountability for those responsible, expressing solidarity with the Afghan people in their time of distress.

Emotional Reaction from Mohammad Nabi

Veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi also responded emotionally to the strikes, mourning the loss of life and the impact on families. He shared his feelings on social media, lamenting, “Tonight in Kabul, hope was extinguished at a hospital.” Nabi described the tragic circumstances faced by young men seeking treatment, stating that they were “murdered in a bombing by the Pakistani military regime.” He recounted the harrowing scenes of mothers anxiously waiting at the gates, calling out to their sons, and noted that lives were abruptly cut short on the 28th night of Ramadan.

Details of the Attack on the Kabul Hospital

The Afghan government has accused the military of Pakistan of conducting the airstrike that hit the Omar Addiction Treatment Hospital, a significant medical facility catering to individuals battling drug addiction. Hamdullah Fitrat, spokesperson for the Afghan government, reported that the attack occurred around 9 PM local time and resulted in extensive damage to the hospital, which has a capacity of 2,000 beds. Fitrat indicated that the number of fatalities had reached 400, with approximately 250 others sustaining injuries. Footage and images circulated on social media and local networks depicted security personnel searching through rubble and firefighters combating flames among the wreckage.

Pakistan Denies Involvement in Civilian Casualties

In response to the accusations from Afghanistan, Pakistani officials denied any responsibility for the civilian casualties, asserting that their military operations were aimed at specific military targets in Kabul and the eastern province of Nangarhar. They maintained that no civilian structures were impacted during these operations. Despite this denial, the incident has triggered widespread outcry and sorrow across Afghanistan, prompting many to call for an international inquiry into the airstrike.
