Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has emphasised the need for immediate action against illegal constructions in the capital following the recent collapse of a building in Satya Niketan. This incident, which involved a five-storeyed structure used for paying guest accommodations, resulted in the tragic deaths of seven individuals and injuries to several others. The Chief Minister’s order, issued on September 9, aims to prevent any further incidents by intensifying the enforcement of building regulations across the city.

Intensified Inspections and Demolitions Planned

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been instructed to execute demolition drives in various areas beginning Wednesday. Senior officials have been tasked to oversee these operations in person, ensuring that all actions taken comply with established regulations. The crackdown will focus not only on illegal constructions but also on paying guest facilities and hostels that may have been built without the necessary permissions.

In addition to demolitions, Gupta has directed MCD officials to undertake thorough inspections of hostels and PG accommodations throughout Delhi. These inspections aim to uncover any structures that do not adhere to safety and building codes. Authorities will also scrutinise building records to ascertain the timeline and legitimacy of any illegal constructions, identifying which administration had jurisdiction at the time of the violations.

Through this rigorous approach, the Delhi government is looking to hold civic authorities accountable while ensuring public safety and compliance with building norms. Senior MCD officials have been advised to carefully monitor operations in the field and implement any necessary actions based on the findings from the inspections.

Legal Actions Following Building Collapse

In the aftermath of the Satya Niketan building collapse, urgent legal measures have been initiated. Property owner Urmila Gupta, along with her husband Hariram Gupta and their son Mahesh Gupta, has been arrested by the police for their alleged roles in the incident. Furthermore, a labour contractor named Sanoj was also apprehended in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj and is currently under investigation.

These developments have prompted not only criminal investigations but also a broader dialogue regarding building safety and accountability in Delhi. The Delhi High Court has taken notice of the situation by issuing a notice to the Union Government, the Delhi Government, and Delhi University. This action was prompted by a public interest litigation demanding adequate hostel facilities for students at various colleges linked with Delhi University.

The outcomes from these legal proceedings and the heightened enforcement actions by the MCD may result in significant changes to how illegal constructions are monitored and addressed in the future.
