Actor Nana Patekar has disclosed that he spent approximately 60 days with the Indian Army during the Kargil War in 1999. In a recent interview, Patekar recounted how he sought approval from then Defence Minister George Fernandes to join the military personnel engaged in the conflict. His request was ultimately granted, leading him to become a member of a Quick Reaction Team (QRT).

Patekar expressed his desire to support the Army during the Kargil conflict, prompting him to approach Fernandes for permission. Initially, Fernandes informed him that a civilian could not easily join the Army, but Patekar insisted on his capabilities, citing his commando training and proficiency with firearms. He also claimed to have represented India at the national level in rifle shooting, where he secured a bronze medal.

The Journey to the Frontlines

The interaction between Patekar and Fernandes, as described by the actor, took a pivotal turn when the Defence Minister asked when he wanted to depart. Upon affirming he was ready to leave immediately, Patekar was instructed to do so that very day. Consequently, he spent around 60 days accompanying the troops and travelled to various strategic locations such as Dras, Leh, Kupwara, Baramulla, and Sopore.

While Patekar declined to elaborate on his specific activities while with the Army, he confirmed his role within a Quick Reaction Team, acknowledged as one of the most elite units in the Indian Army. His brief comments on the experience suggested that he wished to maintain some privacy regarding the details of his time spent in the field.

Reflecting on the challenges faced during his military involvement, Patekar noted the significant physical toll it took on him. He remarked that he weighed 76 kg when he enlisted and returned weighing only 56 kg, illustrating the demanding nature of the experience.

Patekar revealed that despite the years gone by, he had rarely spoken about his experience with the Army. The actor explained that he was only discussing it because it was brought up by the interviewer. He conveyed a sense of humility about his time with the military, indicating that he did not view it as an achievement to boast about. Rather, it was a small endeavour he undertook for his country.

In his remarks, Patekar expressed contentment with having contributed in some measure to the national cause, stating, “I felt happy. I could at least do this little bit for the country.” This sentiment captures his perspective on serving alongside the armed forces during a pivotal moment in India’s history.
