ICFRE Assigned To Study Hydrology And Flora In Aravalli Conservation Efforts

The CSR Journal Magazine

Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav announced a thorough plan for the ecological restoration and sustainable development of the Aravalli range in the Gurugram area on August 20, 2026. This plan follows a high-level meeting led by Union Minister Manohar Lal. The initiative aims to protect the ancient mountain system through specialised research efforts.

During the announcement, Yadav stated that the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) has been designated to examine the hydrological aspects and flora of the region. The initiative will also involve the identification of native vegetation, considering that both woodlands and grasslands, as well as wetlands, play crucial roles in the ecosystem.

The mission titled “Green Gurugram,” which spans the National Capital Region (NCR), seeks to transition from non-native plantations to indigenous ecological practices. This change is part of a larger strategy to enhance the region’s environmental health through targeted research and action.

Ongoing Initiatives and Projects

The authorities have previously engaged in several initiatives, including the planting of 2 lakh trees across 1,500 acres near Manesar as part of the recent Van Mahotsav celebration. Moreover, the 800-acre Matri Van and the Aravalli Safari projects are also being actively developed.

Yadav provided insights into the ongoing greening efforts within urban areas of the NCR. He remarked that the government aims to green spaces stretching from the Delhi Ridge into the neighbouring regions, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing urban biodiversity and resilience against environmental challenges.

Additionally, approximately 10,000 acres have been designated as forest land by the Haryana government. The focus will be on planting traditional species, including Dhak, Ber, Baheda, Neem, Peepal, and Banyan trees. In conjunction, over 25 local grass varieties will also be introduced to support ecological balance.

Measures To Combat Air Pollution And Promote Awareness

Beyond forest conservation, the Union Minister highlighted the government’s proactive measures targeting seasonal air pollution issues in the NCR. During a recent meeting with the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), Yadav underscored ongoing efforts to tackle various sources of pollution in the region.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) is engaged in assessing Online Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (OCEMS) and Air Pollution Control Devices (APCD). Collaborations with the Ministry of Transport are also underway, concentrating on reducing vehicular emissions as part of a broader strategy to combat air quality issues.

Moreover, updated regulations on Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste management and Solid Waste Management are being implemented across key municipalities, including Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, Sonipat, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The Minister expressed a desire to launch extensive public awareness campaigns to ensure that the community is knowledgeable about these environmental regulations and initiatives.

Through this multifaceted approach, the authorities aim to address vehicular pollution, dust pollution, solid waste management, and the ongoing greening initiatives in a coordinated manner. Emphasis on public involvement is expected to enhance compliance and foster a collective effort towards achieving these environmental goals.
