R Vaishali Maintains Strong Position in FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian Grandmaster R Vaishali remained a strong contender for the title at the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026 after securing a hard-fought draw against China’s Tan Zhongyi on Tuesday. In a match characterised by intense strategy, Vaishali managed to hold her ground in a crucial penultimate round.

The game commenced with challenging circumstances for Vaishali, who faced pressure both on the board and from the ticking clock. By move 25, it seemed that Zhongyi had a definite advantage, appearing to dominate the position and pushing Vaishali into a defensive stance.

However, the match shifted dramatically on move 26, when Zhongyi made an error by opting for a passive queen move rather than capitalising on an available pawn. This oversight provided Vaishali the opportunity to stabilise her position, which she seized with meticulous accuracy and composure.

From that point, Vaishali expertly neutralised the threats posed by her opponent, leading the game to a conclusion via threefold repetition on move 34. This strategic draw ensured that Vaishali would enter the final round with a joint lead in the tournament.

Assaubayeva’s Victory Changes Dynamics

Alongside Vaishali’s draw, Kazakhstan’s Bibisara Assaubayeva dramatically impacted the tournament landscape by securing a decisive win against Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk. Assaubayeva initiated the match with strong moves and maintained her control through the middlegame, converting her advantage to join Vaishali at the top of the leaderboard with 7.5 points.

Another noteworthy outcome occurred in the encounter between China’s Zhu Jiner and Russia’s Aleksandra Goryachkina. Zhu, playing with the white pieces, faced a setback as Goryachkina delivered a commendable performance, ultimately winning the game. This loss relegated Zhu from the top tier, placing her half a point behind the joint leaders.

The final day of the tournament promises an exhilarating finish, with multiple players still vying for the title. Notably, R Vaishali is set to face Kateryna Lagno with the white pieces in the decisive Round 14. Assaubayeva will tackle India’s Divya Deshmukh, while Zhu will compete against Muzychuk, both playing with black pieces.

Standings Overview Ahead of Final Round

As the tournament approaches its conclusion, Vaishali and Assaubayeva hold the lead with 7.5 points each. Following them is Zhu Jiner with 7 points, while contenders Anna Muzychuk, Kateryna Lagno, and Aleksandra Goryachkina sit closely behind at 6.5 points each. The final round will be crucial for determining the champion, as numerous players remain within striking distance, dependent on the outcomes of their respective matches.

The results from Round 13 were as follows: Bibisara Assaubayeva defeated Anna Muzychuk, Kateryna Lagno overcame Divya Deshmukh, R Vaishali drew with Tan Zhongyi, and Aleksandra Goryachkina triumphed over Zhu Jiner. With the stakes high and tension building, the final round is anticipated to deliver thrilling chess action.

The dynamic nature of this tournament has showcased not only the players’ strategic prowess but also highlights the intense competition as they seek the prestigious title. All eyes will be on the upcoming matches, where every move can significantly alter the standings and outcomes for the players involved.
