Baloch Rebels Conduct First Naval Operation, Killing Pakistani Soldiers Off Gwadar Coast

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has reportedly executed its inaugural maritime strike against Pakistani security forces, resulting in the death of three personnel from the Pakistan Coast Guard. The incident took place near Jiwani, a coastal town in Balochistan, signifying a significant shift in the operational tactics employed by the rebel group. According to reports, armed members of the BLA opened fire on a Coast Guard patrol vessel while it was on a routine mission in the Arabian Sea.

A video, shared by the BLA’s media outlet, Hakkal, purportedly illustrates the rebels attacking the Pakistani soldiers from a speed boat, employing automatic weapon fire. The video has been circulated on various platforms, with the authenticity confirmed by The Balochistan Post, a Pakistan-based news agency.

It has been reported that the boat was patrolling close to the Pakistan-Iran maritime boundary when the attack occurred. Intelligence officials in Pakistan acknowledged that all three individuals on board were killed during the assault. The victims have been identified as Naik Afzal, Sepoy Jameel, and Sepoy Umar.

Expansion of Operational Strategy

The BLA released a statement asserting that the attack marks an extension of its operational capabilities into maritime environments. The group characterised the offensive as the beginning of a new phase in its ongoing insurgency, effectively moving beyond traditional land-based confrontations. BLA spokesperson Jeeyand Baloch described the attack as a “new and critical development” in the group’s overall strategy.

Moreover, the BLA aims to disrupt what it describes as the ongoing exploitation of Baloch resources via maritime routes. According to its spokesperson, the intention is to inflict losses upon Pakistani forces “on every front.” This operation comes at a time when Gwadar, a strategically important port and a key component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is increasingly under scrutiny regarding security and stability.

Experts have indicated that this attack could represent a tactical adjustment that may widen the conflict in Balochistan, a region currently facing persistent separatist tensions. Following the incident, Pakistani authorities reportedly heightened coastal security and initiated an investigation into the assault.

Formation of Maritime Defence Division

The BLA has additionally announced the establishment of the Hammal Maritime Defence Force (HMDF), positioning it as their official naval division. This move has been described as the genesis of what the BLA terms a “national navy,” with the objective of protecting Baloch maritime interests. According to spokesperson Jeeyand Baloch, the HMDF conducted its first operation at approximately 10:00 AM at a location identified as “Mil Tiyab” in the Jiwani area.

In this operation, the BLA reportedly targeted a vessel belonging to the “occupying Pakistani Navy.” Such developments illustrate the evolving landscape of insurgent activities in Balochistan, where militant groups are testing new fronts, which could lead to alterations in security dynamics both on land and at sea.

The incident and its aftermath underscore the increasing complexity of the conflict in Balochistan, as various factions seek to assert their presence and operational capabilities within both terrestrial and maritime domains. The implications of these actions may resonate well beyond the immediate locality, potentially influencing broader security considerations in the region.
