New TRACES Portal Launched To Enhance TDS Filing Experience

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Income Tax Department has launched a newly upgraded version of its TRACES (TDS Reconciliation Analysis and Correction Enabling System) portal, aimed at simplifying the process of managing Tax Deducted at Source (TDS). This development comes at a pivotal time, coinciding with the implementation of the new Income Tax Act, 2025, which signifies a movement towards a more digital and efficient tax environment.

With a focus on improving usability, the updated portal features a more modern design and enhanced functionality. The objective is to reduce user confusion and facilitate smoother navigation for both individual users and businesses in handling TDS matters.

Users attempting to access the old version of the TRACES website will be automatically redirected to the new portal, ensuring a seamless transition without any additional effort or complications required from users.

Key Features of the New Portal

A key innovation of the new TRACES portal is the introduction of a centralised dashboard. This feature allows users to access various functionalities all in one location, eliminating the need to navigate through multiple sections of the platform.

The dashboard provides users with the ability to view their Form 26AS, download TDS certificates such as Forms 16, 16A, and 16B, track TDS credits, and request online corrections. This streamlined process aims to enhance transparency and save time for taxpayers.

Additionally, a dedicated compliance section has been established to assist users in navigating both the new tax regulations and historical records from previous financial years, thus ensuring that all users are well-informed about their obligations.

Changes in TDS and TCS Processing

The upgraded TRACES portal is designed as a single-window system for both TDS and TCS services. This consolidation means users will no longer face fragmented processes or have to engage with various platforms for their tax-related needs.

Furthermore, a separate portal has been established specifically for non-resident taxpayers, thereby enhancing the organisation and accessibility of services tailored to different user categories.

Another significant shift involves the replacement of existing TDS return forms. The previously used Forms 24Q and 26Q have been substituted with the new Form 138 and Form 140. Form 138 will pertain to salary-related TDS reporting, while Form 140 will cover non-salary payments, including rent, commissions, and professional fees. While the frequency of filing will still be quarterly, these new forms are expected to minimise errors and improve processing times.

In cases involving property transactions, the procedure for depositing TDS remains unchanged; buyers are still required to use Form 26QB via the Income Tax e-filing portal. However, the new TRACES platform will simplify subsequent tasks, including downloading Form 16B and tracking TDS credits, along with the ability to verify and correct details as necessary.

The launch of the revamped TRACES portal reflects an ongoing commitment to digitisation and the simplification of tax compliance. The Income Tax Department aims to ease the burden of tax management, thereby creating a more accessible system for taxpayers.
