Two first-year law students, identified as Abhimanyu and Abhinav, were arrested by the Delhi Police following a complaint filed by a student from Delhi University. The complaint detailed an incident on the evening of September 23, when the female student and her friend were reportedly harassed and verbally abused by occupants of a vehicle in Mukherjee Nagar, a locality near the university’s North Campus.

The alleged harassment occurred around 9.30 pm near Hakikat Park. According to the victim, the occupants of a Safari vehicle made derogatory remarks towards her and her friend while they were walking. The situation escalated when the individuals inside the vehicle purportedly followed the two women, leading to a confrontation when they attempted to record the incident on their phones.

The student stated that upon stopping to film the encounter, the vehicle’s occupants allegedly tried to forcibly drag them inside. In response, the women took out their mobile phone, prompting the vehicle to flee the scene, which raised significant concerns regarding their safety.

Complications in Reporting the Incident

After the encounter, the students sought assistance at a nearby police station. However, they reported that they were informed the area did not fall under that police station’s jurisdiction. It took four to five hours before they were able to successfully register their complaint regarding the incident, highlighting potential challenges in the response mechanism to such occurrences.

Following the lodging of the complaint, a written report was processed by the Delhi Police during the night of September 23 and 24. This initiated a thorough inquiry which enabled officers to trace the vehicle involved in the incident back to its registered owner, identified as Naman Kumar. Police indicated that Kumar was driving the vehicle at the time, accompanied by two to three acquaintances.

The police moved quickly to seize the vehicle on Thursday, ensuring that it could be used as evidence in the ongoing investigation. An FIR has been registered at the Mukherjee Nagar police station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including stalking and actions intended to insult a woman’s modesty.

Ongoing Investigation by Police

Authorities are presently conducting an extensive investigation into the matter to anticipate any further developments. The police have noted that they are committed to addressing the issue of harassment against women and are analysing the circumstances surrounding the case to ensure a thorough examination of the evidence and witness accounts.

The arrests come as part of broader concerns regarding safety on university campuses and in surrounding areas, which have been highlighted in recent discussions about women’s safety. Police have reiterated the importance of timely reporting of such incidents to facilitate immediate action, as delays can hinder effective enforcement of the law.

As the investigation continues, both Abhimanyu and Abhinav will face legal proceedings regarding the allegations made against them. The outcome of the investigation will determine the next steps in this case, and police are expected to provide updates as more information becomes available.
