US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded their Washington state visit on Friday with pledges to maintain dialogue and an extension of their tariff truce, while major differences over Taiwan, artificial intelligence and broader trade issues remained unresolved. The visit combined high-level diplomacy with elaborate ceremony, including a state dinner and a visit to the US National Archives.

The summit produced some areas of continued engagement but few major new agreements. The two leaders are expected to meet again at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and the G20 meeting in Miami in December, providing further opportunities for negotiations between the world’s two largest economies.

Trump And Xi Highlight Bilateral Ties

Trump adopted a positive tone following his discussions with Xi, describing the meeting as “one of Friendship, Strength, and Success, for both China and the U.S.A.”

“We’ve made great strides, very positive for both countries,” Trump told reporters as he had tea with Xi at the White House.

Xi said the Washington visit had added “new substance” to his earlier meeting with Trump in Beijing. He said the two countries had agreed to maintain “strategic stability on the basis of respect, fairness, and reciprocity”.

The warm public messaging came as Washington and Beijing continued to manage differences across trade, technology and regional security. Both sides have sought to keep communication channels open despite disagreements over several major issues.

Trade Truce Extended, Key Issues Unresolved

One of the main concrete outcomes was the extension of the existing tariff truce between the United States and China. The arrangement gives both sides additional time to work through their trade dispute, although no comprehensive new trade agreement was announced.

The extension follows earlier negotiations between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. The two sides had been discussing whether to continue the existing arrangement or pursue a broader agreement.

Taiwan and artificial intelligence remained among the most sensitive issues in the relationship. Washington and Beijing have continued to disagree over Taiwan, while competition over advanced technologies and AI has created additional tensions between the two countries.

The leaders nevertheless agreed to continue discussions. Their expected meetings at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and the G20 gathering in Miami in December will provide further opportunities to address outstanding issues.

White House Visit Brings Ceremony And Symbolism

Trump organised an elaborate programme for Xi’s visit, including a military welcome, a state dinner attended by leading technology and business figures, and a tour of the White House helipad and the construction site of the new ballroom.

On Friday, Trump and Xi, accompanied by their wives Melania Trump and Peng Liyuan, visited the National Archives. They viewed the US Constitution and Declaration of Independence during the visit.

“We’re just comparing how this goes 250 years, theirs goes 6,000 years,” Trump said, referring to the histories of the United States and China.

The visit also included an unexpected announcement involving pandas. Two Chinese pandas are expected to arrive at a US zoo, adding another symbolic element to the diplomatic engagement.

Iran Also Discussed At Summit

Trump confirmed that Iran was also discussed during his talks with Xi, linking the US-China summit to the wider geopolitical tensions surrounding the Middle East.

Asked at the National Archives whether the two leaders had discussed Iran, Trump replied: “We did, we did.”

Trump was also asked about the possibility of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil shipments. “I think we’re going to do great,” he said.

The Washington visit therefore ended with continued engagement between Trump and Xi, an extended trade truce and plans for further meetings, while some of the most difficult questions in the US-China relationship remained subject to ongoing negotiations.
