Trump States US Military Will Respond Severely to Iranian Threats

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump has asserted that he has given the military orders to respond to Iran with unprecedented force should the nation act on threats against his life. He described these measures as a response to what he considers ongoing hostilities from Tehran. This statement has gained traction following his remarks about the legitimacy of Iranian threats, and reports indicating credible plots against him.

On Saturday, Trump took to his social media platform to announce that Iran had made threats to “assassinate or attempt to assassinate” him. He claimed that 1,000 missiles are “Locked and Loaded” in readiness for any aggressive actions from the Iranian government, and that additional thousands are prepared to follow if necessary.

The White House has not provided immediate clarification regarding the status of these military orders should Trump be killed, an event that would trigger the Presidential Succession Act, placing Vice President JD Vance in command.

Iran’s Response and Context of Threats

Shortly after Trump’s comments, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei stated that Iran would continue to seek vengeance for the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during significant military conflicts involving the US and Israel earlier this year. In a televised address, he vowed to avenge the ‘pure blood of martyrs’ from the two wars, asserting that such retribution is the will of the Iranian populace.

During recent public mourning events for the late Ayatollah, demonstrators have called for action against both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This display underscores the rising tensions between the two nations, particularly in light of the ongoing military confrontations.

Reports from credible sources, including The Wall Street Journal, noted that Israeli officials had informed their American counterparts of renewed Iranian intentions to assassinate Trump. Trump, during a NATO summit in Turkey, seemingly acknowledged these threats, stating, “They want to take out the US leader – me.”

Legal Framework for Military Action

While Trump’s assertions suggest imminent military action against Iran, experts point out that any response would rely on the authority of the current commander in chief, rather than an automatic retaliatory mechanism. Garrett M. Graff, author of “Raven Rock,” explained that the US has not employed an automatic command system for nuclear or military strikes in such situations.

Under US law, the nuclear launch authority would transfer to the Vice President or designated successor immediately upon the president’s demise. This means that any military action, as alluded to by Trump, would require the approval of the Vice President, should a contingency arise.

Trump’s statements indicated that he may have left specific instructions with Vance regarding military response, but such directives could face legal challenges under existing protocols. Furthermore, discussions had previously occurred about the use of conventional military force against Iran rather than nuclear options.

Notably, Trump has been the target of two domestic assassination attempts during his current presidential campaign and has faced increased scrutiny regarding his security arrangements. Recent changes in his transport, opting to use an older Air Force One model for part of his journey from Turkey, have raised questions about his safety amidst the threats.

The risks presented by Iranian threats to US leaders, including Trump, have been noted continuously. The Biden administration has previously issued severe warnings to Tehran about potential consequences for actions against American citizens, reinforcing that the US will respond firm against aggression.
