Transformation of Women’s Cricket in India Following World Cup Victory: Jemimah Rodrigues

The CSR Journal Magazine

Jemimah Rodrigues has articulated how India’s triumph in the Women’s World Cup has revolutionized cricket for women in the nation. In November 2025, India secured the championship by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in front of an enthusiastic crowd in Navi Mumbai. This victory is anticipated to serve as a pivotal moment for Indian women’s cricket, akin to the historic 1983 World Cup win for the men’s team.

Inspiration for Future Cricketers

Jemimah, who amassed 292 runs throughout the tournament over seven innings, highlighted the significant increase in young cricketers inspired by this victory. She noted that this influence extends to both girls and boys, describing experiences where young fans expressed admiration for female cricketers. “I think the biggest change has been the number of kids inspired to take up cricket after the Women’s World Cup. And I’m not just talking about girls, even boys have come up and said, ‘You are my favourite cricketer.’ That’s a very special moment because we didn’t have that before. To see that change is crazy,” she remarked.

Anticipating Future Impact

Reflecting on the victory, Jemimah recognized that while the immediate effects may not be fully visible, the long-term impact on the sport will unfold over the coming years. “We may not fully understand it now, but I think in a few years, when we look back at this moment, we’ll properly realise the kind of impact this World Cup has had,” she stated, underlining the potential for a lasting legacy for women’s cricket in India.

Looking Ahead to the T20 World Cup

In addition to discussing the World Cup, Jemimah expressed excitement following India’s recent 2-1 T20I series victory in Australia, marking their first win on Australian soil in a decade. She emphasized that this accomplishment is vital as the team prepares for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup. Jemimah acknowledged the importance of refining their gameplay while developing a consistent winning mentality. “It is very important because we’re heading into a T20 World Cup, and we know how competitive Australia always are against us. It felt really good, but we also know the work doesn’t stop here. There’s still a lot more to do and several areas we need to improve. We’ve spoken about making winning a habit, and that’s what we’re working towards,” she explained.

Upcoming Challenges

Following their success in Australia, the Indian women’s cricket team is set to depart for South Africa, where they will compete in five T20Is scheduled between April 17 and April 27 across cities like Durban, Johannesburg, and Benoni. This series is viewed as a crucial stepping stone in maintaining momentum as they gear up for international competitions.
