Puducherry, a colony of the French up until 1954, is a union territory (UT) of India known for its heritage and culture. The French influence in the region still persists where many natives of Puducherry still speak the French language and appreciate French cuisine. The coastal union territory is a tourism hotspot for Indians and foreigners alike, making its development and administration of utmost importance. CSR initiatives in Puducherry
Waterrich Puducherry Initiative and Comprehensive Children Development Programme by Whirlpool
Whirlpool’s “Waterrich Puducherry” initiative was aimed at improving the water table through desilting the water feeder channels before the monsoon season. The initiative resulted in ensuring free flow of water for 15 Kms to 6 surrounding villages and helped avoid water stagnation thus preventing mosquito breeding, resulting in a decrease of diseases like malaria, dengue etc. Through this initiative, the company has successfully benefited the lives of over 40,000 locals residing in the surrounding villages.
Additionally, Whirlpool has launched a ‘Comprehensive Children Development Programme’ with an aim to transforming the Government School. Under the programme, the Government High School at Kothapurinatham, Puducherry was transformed into a safe and hygienic educational institution through the installation fully-equipped kitchen, RO system, kids play station, revamped hand wash area, new smart boards, safer classrooms with proper walls and rainproof terrace, water tank, new desks, flooring etc.
Danfoss Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Lab and Training Centre
With an aim to foster the talent of young RAC technicians, Danfoss India has established a Danfoss Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Lab and Training Centre at Swami Vivekananda Rural Community College, Puducherry. The new set comprises of a fully equipped RAC workshop, 3 training rooms and a project room. This is a step towards extending support to create a sustainable livelihood for students from economically challenged backgrounds in the local community and help address the skill gap in the Indian Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) industry. The company is also set to launch a new ‘Danfoss Academic Best Project Award’ to recognize and reward novel out-of-the-box solutions, from amongst the RAC students, thereby making the best use of its Project room & Lab facilities.
Tata Motors Fulfilling Engineering Dreams of Students
Tata Motors has collaborated with Avanti Fellow NGO to conduct special coaching classes for unprivileged students to prepare for advanced competitive exams like NEET, IIT JEE Mains and IIT JEE. So far, more than 616 students enrolled in around 62 JNV schools of Puducherry, Kolhapur, Mangalore and Palghar have reaped the benefits from this initiative since 2013-14.
Classes are conducted at JNV centres across the country for students of class 11th and 12th, and the programme identifies, nurtures and enables young minds who are fascinated by science and technology and aspire to build their career in the same domain. Over the years, this programme has featured the students in the top 500 on the IIT Joint Entrance examination list and they bagged full-time scholarships at renowned institutions.
