Snow Avalanche Engulfs Houses and Vehicles in Sonamarg

On Tuesday night a devastating avalanche struck the Sarbal area of Sonamarg in J&K. The avalanche engulfed many houses and vehicles parked outside. However, officials have confirmed no casualties or injuries. As per the authorities, around 10.12 pm, the avalanche hit the Sonamarg tourist area, huge amount of snow rushed down the mountains and covered homes and shops. This devastating moment was captured in CCTV footage. Officials said, “There are no reports of any loss of life.” However, in the area a warning has been issued for the high-intensity avalanche and snowfall. There was fresh snowfall in Kashmir, leading to the closure of the national highway of Jammu-Srinagar and also many flights were cancelled, leaving passengers stuck in the valley.

Snowfall started in J&K from Monday night and a few moments later, the whole area was snow covered. Even National Highway 44 was shut down as heaps of snow piled up, making movement difficult. As per aviation records, 58 scheduled flights were cancelled, out of which 29 arrivals and 29 departures. Authorities said, “Runway could not be used safely because the snowfall continued throughout the day,”.

Weather forecast

As per the weather forecast by the Meteorological Department of India, it is expected that there will be light to moderate rain or snow across the valley and there are chances of thunderstorms and gusty winds at different places. Besides, moderate precipitation would also prevail in many areas. An avalanche warning has been issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Disaster Management Authority in at least 11 districts. Besides, there is a warning of high-danger in place for areas that are above 2,000 metres in Ganderbal district. In areas like Anantnag, Bandipora, Baramulla, Kulgam and Kupwara in Kashmir, and in Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri and Ramban in the Jammu region, a medium warning has been issued. As per MeT department prediction there will be dry conditions, but from January 29 to January 31, it will be cloudy and from Feb 1 to 2, there will be light to moderate rain/snow.
