Rain Offers Respite Across India, Hailstorms Anticipated in Eastern Regions

The CSR Journal Magazine

A refreshing spell of rain swept across northwest India on Sunday, alleviating extreme heat conditions as temperatures fell by three to seven degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that pre-monsoon activity will persist, bolstered by a new Western Disturbance approaching the region. Major cities including Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram experienced considerable rainfall that morning, providing a welcome respite for residents.

Forecast for the National Capital

Moving into Monday, the national capital will likely encounter a partly cloudy sky alongside strong surface winds ranging from 20 to 30 kilometers per hour. An expert from Mausam Tak, Devendra Tripathi, mentioned that while there is a diminished prospect of rain on Monday compared to the previous day, some regions in the Tarai areas of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh could still experience rainfall.

Anticipated Hailstorms and Severe Weather in Eastern India

As preparations ramp up, East and central India are expected to face significant rainfall. The IMD has released advisories regarding thunderstorms, lightning, and wind gusts reaching up to 70 kilometers per hour, with hailstorms predicted for Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand on Monday. Tripathi noted that various states including Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu may witness pre-monsoon weather activities.

Impact on Agriculture and Future Weather Developments

Independent meteorological expert Navdeep Dahiya has warned that wind speeds of 50 kilometers per hour, coupled with isolated hailstorms, could pose risks to standing rabi crops in rural areas. Furthermore, another Western Disturbance is projected to influence northwest India starting the evening of Tuesday, March 17, followed by potential rain and storms beginning Wednesday, March 18.
