Rain and Thunderstorms Forecasted Across India on October 10

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that rain and thunderstorms are anticipated across various regions of India on Saturday, October 10, as the southwest monsoon continues its retreat. In particular, Delhi, Haryana, and Chandigarh are expected to experience isolated thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph.

Additionally, states such as Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan may witness similar conditions, where thunderstorms and lightning could produce gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph. Rainfall is likely to occur in isolated to scattered areas across Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and parts of Rajasthan.

Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and adjacent regions are also predicted to receive fairly widespread rainfall, as per the IMD forecast. This weather activity is influenced by a weather system over northern Pakistan identified as a Western Disturbance, which is noted for affecting weather patterns in northwestern India, especially the western Himalayan region.

Heavy Rain Predicted in Southern India

In southern India, significant rainfall is anticipated on October 10, particularly in Kerala and Mahe, as well as Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The IMD underscores that heavy rainfall may occur at isolated locations within these areas.

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are also expected in these regions, in addition to Lakshadweep. Other states including Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Odisha may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph.

Rainfall is forecasted across parts of eastern India, including Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim. Moreover, the northeastern states may witness scattered showers and thunderstorms during this period.

Monsoon Withdrawal Progress and Upcoming Weather Systems

The current southwest monsoon withdrawal line extends from parts of northeastern India through Supaul, Ranchi, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Bijapur, Hyderabad, Belagavi, and Panjim to the Arabian Sea. The IMD has also indicated that conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for the monsoon to withdraw from more regions over the next three to four days.

However, despite this retreat, rainfall will not cease entirely, as existing weather systems may continue to produce showers and thunderstorms. Furthermore, another weather system is expected to emerge soon.

An upper-air cyclonic circulation located over the Gulf of Thailand and surrounding areas is forecast to move into the Andaman Sea by October 11. This could lead to the formation of a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal around October 13, potentially impacting weather outcomes in the coming days.
