A tense situation developed at Chitkara University in Patiala late on Friday night, triggered by unfounded allegations regarding a ‘ghost’ on campus and two allegedly missing female students. As these rumours circulated on social media, a significant number of students congregated, leading to protests on the campus.

As the situation escalated, the protests reportedly turned violent, culminating in acts of vandalism. Police were dispatched to the university as unrest intensified, working to restore order amid the chaotic environment.

During the disturbances, clashes reportedly occurred between protesting students and police personnel, who were attempting to manage the crowd. A government police vehicle sustained damage during these confrontations, highlighting the severity of the unrest.

Allegations Against Police Personnel and Administrative Statements

In the midst of the chaos, students allegedly assaulted Ajay Kumar, who oversees the KSM police post in City Rajpura. Accusations emerged that Kumar was intoxicated at the time of the incident, prompting authorities to conduct a medical examination at the university laboratory. However, these claims have not been independently verified.

The unrest was magnified by claims from students stating that a female student had died by suicide on campus previously, suggesting her ‘ghost’ was haunting the hostel. University authorities and police officials refuted these allegations, asserting that no suicides had occurred.

According to the university administration, reports indicated that certain individuals had been knocking on students’ doors at night, contributing to the spread of these baseless rumours. Claims regarding the disappearance of two female students also emerged, with related posts being circulated on social media platforms.

Police Response and Assurance of Safety

Deputy Superintendent of Police Sukhdev Singh arrived at the university to address the situation. He stated that no specific names had been brought forward regarding the alleged missing students and that no direct information had been received about which students were reportedly unaccounted for. Singh confirmed that the police would take the complaints seriously and conduct a thorough investigation.

Singh assured parents that the situation on campus had returned to a state of peace and affirmed that students were safe within the university. With police remaining present at the site, security measures continued to be monitored closely to prevent further unrest.

Additionally, both the police and university administration committed to reviewing CCTV footage from the area to clarify events related to the knocking incidents and the ensuing rumour propagation. After receiving assurances from authorities, students began to disperse gradually, returning to their respective hostels and ending the protest peacefully.
