The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Uttarakhand on Tuesday, April 14, marking his 27th trip to the state. This visit is significant as it will be his 17th trip during the tenure of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The Prime Minister’s itinerary includes the inauguration of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, a key infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity between the two regions.

Additionally, Modi will dedicate the country’s first variable speed pumped storage plant, which has a capacity of 1,000 MW, located in Tehri. This project is part of a broader effort to transform the energy landscape in India. The announcement of his visit has generated considerable enthusiasm among the residents of Uttarakhand, prompting the state government to undertake extensive preparations to ensure a successful inauguration ceremony.

Historical Context of Prime Minister’s Visits

Since assuming the role of Prime Minister in May 2014, Narendra Modi has maintained a strong connection with Uttarakhand. His first visit to the state occurred on September 11, 2015, when he arrived in Rishikesh, introducing a pattern of frequent engagements with local spiritual sites, including a notable meeting with spiritual leader Dayanand Giri at the Dayanand Saraswati Ashram.

Modi has displayed a profound reverence for several pilgrimage destinations in Uttarakhand, having visited Kedarnath five times. His trips to sacred sites like Kedarnath and Badrinath have reportedly encouraged increased pilgrimage activity. Following natural disasters that had previously deterred visitors, his presence at these shrines helped convey messages of safety and devotion, significantly boosting the number of pilgrims.

Moreover, after Modi’s visit to Adi Kailash in Pithoragarh, there was a discernible rise in the number of visitors to the site. His recent trip to Mukhba in Uttarkashi district, the winter residence of Goddess Ganga, served to promote winter pilgrimage and bolster tourism throughout the year in the region.

Development Initiatives Under Modi’s Leadership

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has recognised Modi’s emotional and spiritual link to Uttarakhand, asserting that the state occupies a unique place in his heart. Under Modi’s leadership, numerous substantial development initiatives have been initiated, with over Rs 2 lakh crore allocated for various projects in the state.

Transformations in the connectivity infrastructure have been noteworthy, with projects such as the Char Dham All Weather Road, the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Project, and various ropeway initiatives for Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib. The Dehradun-Delhi elevated road project has also been pivotal in improving transportation links. Furthermore, the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) has led to better road connectivity in remote rural areas, along with enhancements in air and rail services.

Since the commencement of Dhami’s tenure, Modi has made 16 visits prior to this upcoming trip, reflecting a sustained commitment to the region. On each visit, the state government has presented symbolic items showcasing Uttarakhand’s rich cultural and religious heritage, along with local products to reaffirm its unique identity.

Tehri Hydro Power Complex Initiative

On April 14, Modi will inaugurate the variable speed pumped storage plant in Tehri, which is essential for meeting India’s growing energy demands. Developed by THDC, this facility is a key component of the 2,400 MW Tehri Hydro Power Complex, which aims to generate additional electricity by leveraging the upper and lower reservoirs of the existing hydro project.

This initiative is poised to mark a significant milestone in India’s energy journey, pointing towards a future of sustainable energy generation. The completion of this project not only showcases advancements in technology but also highlights the government’s commitment to addressing energy security in the country.
