Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated an international conference titled “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” on Saturday. The two-day event, organised by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), is being held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on September 19 and 20. The conference aims to gather a diverse group of participants including judges, environmental experts, senior government officials, and representatives from various environmental and judicial organisations from both India and abroad.

The event has attracted judicial representatives from seventeen countries, highlighting its international significance. It seeks to create a platform for discussions that could lead to meaningful solutions regarding environmental challenges that are increasingly pertinent in the current era.

The inaugural session featured notable dignitaries including Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav, Attorney General R Venkataramani, and NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava. Their presence underscores the importance of integrating judicial perspectives into environmental governance.

Focus on Environmental Challenges and Institutional Cooperation

According to the NGT’s agenda, the conference will include four technical sessions that concentrate on critical environmental and climate-related issues. The discussions are intended to examine the significant challenges confronting the world today, as well as to identify gaps in current policy-making and implementation strategies.

One of the major objectives is to strengthen institutional cooperation among agencies and nations, aiming for a collaborative approach to tackle environmental issues. The valedictory session of the conference will take place on Sunday, featuring President Droupadi Murmu as a key attendee. Other notable figures expected to attend include Union Minister Manohar Lal, Supreme Court Justice PS Narasimha, NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. Their participation is expected to lend additional weight to the outcomes of the discussions held over the two days.
