The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a revamped Aadhaar mobile app that now allows users to update their residential address directly from their smartphones, eliminating the need to visit a physical Aadhaar centre.
The app was dedicated to the nation by the government on January 28, 2026, as part of efforts to simplify identity management and increase convenience for Aadhaar card holders.
What the New App Offers
-
The newly launched Aadhaar app, available for both Android and iOS, adds several enhanced features centered around security, privacy, and usability. It enables users to:
-
Update their address and other demographic details online, including uploading required documents.
-
Authenticate their identity via face recognition, which matches the user’s live image with the Aadhaar enrolment photo to ensure secure identity verification.
-
Share selective Aadhaar information securely using QR codes, reducing the need to reveal the full Aadhaar number in everyday scenarios.
-
Manage up to five family Aadhaar profiles on a single device.
Previously, Aadhaar holders could update their address online through UIDAI’s Self-Service Update Portal (SSUP), but this typically required a separate website and sometimes a visit to an enrolment centre if additional document verification was needed. The new app consolidates these functions in one place, making the process more user-friendly and accessible.
How It Works
-
To use the new address update feature, users simply need to:
-
Download and install the official Aadhaar mobile app from the relevant app store.
-
Log in using their Aadhaar number and OTP sent to their registered mobile number.
-
Navigate to the ‘Update Address’ option in the app and upload valid address proof documents, as guided by on-screen prompts.
-
Complete face authentication to verify identity.
