UIDAI Introduces Revised Name Update Rules for Aadhaar Cards

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced changes to the procedures for updating names on Aadhaar cards. The new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), which came into effect on September 18, 2026, categorises name updates based on the type of correction requested. This revised process aims to streamline applications and enhance the verification mechanisms for various types of name changes.

The updated rules delineate different document requirements depending on whether the request pertains to minor corrections, data-entry mistakes, changes related to marriage or divorce, or complete name changes. UIDAI intends for the verification of submitted documents, affidavits, and Gazette notifications prior to processing a name update request. A key objective of these revisions is to ensure that Aadhaar holders understand the requirements associated with each type of name update, fostering a more efficient application process.

Minor Name Corrections and Their Documentation

Minor name changes are categorised as modifications where a person’s identity remains unaltered. Examples include the expansion of initials, the addition or removal of middle names, adjustments to name orders, or minor spelling corrections that do not change pronunciation. For these types of changes, applicants must provide a valid Proof of Identity (PoI). For applicants under the age of eighteen, an applicable Proof of Relationship (PoR) may also be presented when the name change is based on the Head of Family (HoF).

Examples cited by UIDAI include altering ‘Ram’ to ‘Rama’ or changing ‘Somya’ to ‘Saumya’. These minor alterations are aimed at maintaining the integrity of personal identification without causing significant identity shifts. UIDAI encourages applicants to ensure that the documentation aligns accurately with the requested name modifications to avoid delays in processing.

Specific Procedures for Data-Entry Errors

In cases where a name has been inaccurately entered due to data-entry errors, different rules apply. Adults must submit an Annexure B affidavit alongside PoI or PoR, while minors require a parent or legal guardian to provide an Annexure C affidavit with the appropriate documentation. The corrected name must match the name on previously submitted documents, or the request may face rejection.

Women wishing to update their surnames due to marriage or divorce need to submit an Annexure D affidavit along with PoI. This affidavit confirms the surname change is based on marital status and not an identity change. A registered marriage certificate is also accepted as supporting evidence for such requests. UIDAI has established clear guidelines for name changes resulting from gender transitions, stipulating that the applicable PoI must be provided in these cases as well.

There are specific instances where no additional documentation is required for corrections. For instance, changes involving random capitalisation, such as modifying ‘RaMesh’ to ‘Ramesh’, or the elimination of dots from names, can be made without proof. UIDAI also has distinct rules related to names that include ‘urf’ or ‘alias’. Adults retaining an alias must present an Annexure E affidavit, while minors need an Annexure F affidavit with their respective PoI or PoR.

For comprehensive name changes, considered as major alterations of identity, a Gazette Notification must be obtained alongside the required PoI. UIDAI will verify that the newly requested name corresponds with any previously documented names, alongside the authenticity of all submitted materials. These revisions aim to facilitate a more structured process for updating names on Aadhaar cards, thus enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of identity verification.
