National Nutrition Week was marked at the Adolescent Centre located within Sir Sundarlal Hospital, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, on September 5, 2026. The event was arranged in collaboration with the Mamta Health Institute for Mother and Child based in New Delhi and the National Health Mission under the Uttar Pradesh Government. The theme for this year’s observance was “Discover the Power of Nutrition.”

The programme was overseen by Prof. Dr Sangeeta Rai, who serves as the Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at IMS-BHU and also functions as the Nodal Officer of the Centre of Excellence for Adolescent Health and Development at SSH-BHU. Her leadership ensured the event was well-structured and focused on vital aspects of nutrition.

Key Speakers and Their Insights

A range of experts from various departments contributed to the discussions during the event. Prof. Dr (Major) Anjali Rani, along with Prof. Dr Shikha Sachan and Dr Kirti Kaithwas from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, were invited to share their knowledge. Additionally, Prof. Dr Sarita Choudhary from the Department of Paediatric Surgery also provided her insights on relevant issues.

Prof. Major Anjali Rani highlighted the significance of nutrition in preventing diseases and emphasised the health benefits of traditional Indian foods and millets. This perspective is particularly relevant in a country where dietary habits play a crucial role in overall health.

In her address, Prof. Dr Shikha Sachan stressed the importance of maintaining a balanced diet, ensuring proper hydration, staying physically active, and leading a stress-free life. She pointed out how these elements can mitigate risks associated with hypertension, diabetes, and other lifestyle-related disorders, including conditions like PCOD and PCOS. Furthermore, her insights were aimed at promoting awareness about how an individual’s lifestyle choices can impact long-term health.

Advice for Adolescents and Closing Remarks

Dr Kirti Kaithwas delivered practical dietary advice specifically targeted at adolescent girls, urging them to steer clear of junk food and packaged items. She advocated for a focus on freshly prepared meals that include green vegetables and seasonal fruits, which are essential for a well-rounded diet.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from Counsellor Harsh Kumar Singh, who encapsulated the day’s messages with the slogan, “Eat Right, Be Bright – Healthy Food, Healthy Body, Healthy Mind.” His summation provided a concise reminder of the event’s primary objectives, which were aimed at educating participants about the importance of nutrition.

In addition to the talks, the event was facilitated by a supportive team, including Counsellors Saumya Mishra, Admin Mazahir Abbas Haidri, Intern Jyoti, and Sunny Singh, all of whom contributed to its success. Their collaborative efforts were aimed at ensuring that the key messages regarding nutrition were effectively communicated to all attendees.
