Renowned actor Mohanlal, widely celebrated for his extensive work in Indian cinema, will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2023. The honour will be formally presented during the 71st National Film Awards on September 23, 2025.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which confirmed the news via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“Mohanlal’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! The legendary actor, director, and producer is being honoured for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema. His unmatched talent, versatility, and relentless hard work have set a golden standard in Indian film history,” read the statement.
A Journey Marked by Excellence and Passion
Mohanlal began his acting career with Thiranottam in 1978, though its release was delayed. His official debut came in 1980 with Manjil Virinja Pookkal. Over the decades, he has delivered acclaimed performances in iconic films such as Iruvar, Kireedam, Bharatham, Vanaprastham, Thanmathra, and Drishyam.
He has acted in over 400 films across languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi, making him one of Indian cinema’s most prolific artists.
National and International Recognition
Mohanlal’s work has earned him numerous honours. He has received five National Film Awards, which include two for Best Actor, in addition to Kerala State Awards and international accolades.
In recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019.

Reacting to the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to applaud the veteran actor, “Shri Mohanlal Ji epitomises excellence and versatility. About the Dadasaheb Phalke Award
This prestigious recognition, named after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, widely regarded as the Father of Indian Cinema, is the highest award in Indian film. Due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2023 award is being presented in 2025.
Last year’s recipient was actor Mithun Chakraborty, who received the award for 2022.
