BJP leader Nisith Pramanik has initiated a strong rebuttal against Mamata Banerjee, asserting that her “mental state is not sound”. This statement comes in light of Banerjee’s recent allegations regarding the conduct of the Election Commission of India (ECI). Pramanik’s remarks were directed towards the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo during a press briefing in Bagdogra, West Bengal.

While addressing reporters, Pramanik insisted that the BJP operates within the framework of constitutional governance and adheres strictly to the rule of law. He challenged Banerjee’s comments, suggesting that they stem from her inability to accept the effectiveness of recent electoral measures undertaken by the ECI.

Allegations of Electoral Misconduct

Pramanik further accused the TMC of employing deceptive electoral practices, claiming the party has relied on fictitious voters to maintain power over the last fifteen years. “Unlike the Trinamool Congress, which has formed its government through such means, the BJP has established its position based on legitimate voter support,” he stated.

In his comments, Pramanik also praised the ECI for its efforts in cleansing the electoral rolls by removing duplicate and ineligible entries. He declared this action a significant victory for the citizens of West Bengal, asserting that Banerjee’s displeasure with the ECI’s actions reflected her political insecurities.

He highlighted that the identification of such voters contributed positively to the electoral landscape of Bengal, suggesting that Banerjee’s response was an overreaction to what he termed a clear advancement for democracy.

Mamata Banerjee’s Counter Allegations

Earlier, on September 23, Mamata Banerjee voiced her grievances regarding the alleged partisanship in the election machinery, claiming it had been compromised by officials affiliated with the BJP. She labelled the situation as an unprecedented scandal within India’s electoral framework.

During a press conference, Banerjee called for the arrest of the Chief Election Commissioner, stating that his actions demonstrated a lack of moral authority and undermined the integrity of democratic processes. She expressed concerns over the potential manipulation of official roles within the electoral system by BJP-aligned personnel.

Banerjee further contended that the appointment of Election Returning Officers (EROs) by officials with political affiliations was indicative of systemic corruption and undermining of democratic values. Her unequivocal stance urges authorities to take accountability for these alleged actions.

ECI’s Response to the Allegations

In response to Banerjee’s assertions, the Election Commission issued a statement reiterating that its operations are governed by constitutional mandates, specifically citing Article 324. The ECI maintained that all administrative directives and decisions adhere to legal frameworks.

The commission emphasised that its procedures are structured to maximise transparency, legal compliance, and effective operation within the electoral system. They clarified that queries and discussions raised by members during drafting stages are part of standard operating procedures intended to enhance the electoral process.

As the political landscape intensifies, the confrontations between the BJP and TMC highlight ongoing tensions surrounding electoral integrity and governance in West Bengal, with both parties firmly establishing their positions in this contentious discourse.
