Former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, has reportedly held discussions with key leaders of the Congress party concerning the ongoing issues linked to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. These conversations occur amid intensified preparations among the INDIA bloc parties for a significant meeting on September 30.

According to sources from India Today, the meeting is set to take place at the Constitution Club of India (CCI) in New Delhi. All prominent leaders from the opposition bloc are anticipated to attend, although the specific names of attendees have yet to be confirmed. The strategic consultations among the INDIA bloc parties, aimed at holding an early assembly, have now come to fruition.

The forthcoming meeting will focus primarily on matters related to CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Abhishek Banerjee, a senior leader from the Trinamool Congress, has already spoken with Rahul Gandhi, the Opposition Leader in Congress, addressing concerns surrounding Gyanesh Kumar and alleged electoral irregularities. This telephonic conversation took place earlier in the week.

Coordination Among Opposition Parties Intensifies

As discussions continue, MA Baby, the general secretary of the CPI(M), has also been in touch with other parties within the INDIA bloc as part of the preparatory efforts. The objective remains to bring various opposition factions together as swiftly as possible for a coordinated response.

Sources indicate that the September 30 meeting is primarily tailored to address issues pertaining to CEC Gyanesh Kumar. In addition, a joint press conference involving the opposition leaders is on the agenda following the meeting. This press conference aims to vocalise their concerns regarding Gyanesh Kumar and the functioning of the Election Commission.

Leaders from the INDIA bloc are reportedly aiming to highlight calls for Gyanesh Kumar’s removal and potential criminal proceedings in an emphatic manner. These discussions have become increasingly urgent as the opposition seeks to solidify a united front.

Political Reactions to Mamata Banerjee’s Outreach

BJP leader Dilip Ghosh has openly mocked Mamata Banerjee’s outreach efforts, particularly in her engagement with the CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby to request a meeting of the INDIA bloc next week. Ghosh remarked on Banerjee’s shift in strategy, suggesting that she is seeking new alliances as her influence wanes in her home state.

“She needs to go to Delhi now because there is nothing left for her here. She didn’t go when they were inviting her earlier,” Ghosh stated. He added that it remains to be seen how Banerjee’s appeal for a meeting will be received, given her previous reluctance to engage.

The INDIA bloc parties are striving to reach a consensus on the agenda for the upcoming meeting, and substantial effort is being expended to ensure a unified opposition stance. The anticipated meeting on September 30 is expected to lay the groundwork for future cooperative efforts within the opposition regarding election-related matters.
