A devastating blaze ripped through the crowded Burrabazar area of Kolkata this morning, resulting in extensive damage to property and severely impacting local businesses. The fire, which reportedly started around 5:00 AM on Saturday at an electrical goods store on 17 Ezra Street, required a mammoth effort involving 24 fire tenders before it was finally brought under control around 10:00 AM. Initial estimates suggest that more than 100 shops have been damaged in the incident.
Rapid Spread and Initial Response
The fire was first noticed on the second floor of an electrical appliance store. Local residents initially attempted to douse the flames before alerting the Fire Department.
Initial Mobilization: Six fire tenders immediately rushed to the scene. The number quickly escalated to 10 as the severity of the fire became apparent.
Volatile Conditions: The area, known for being a dense commercial hub, contained a large concentration.
Khidirpur Market fire
Over 1300 shops were destroyed in a massive fire in Kolkata’s Khidirpur market area in June this year. The fire broke out around 1 am on June 16. More than 20 fire tenders brought the blaze under control. Several shops, including rice godowns, have been destroyed. There are several oil godowns and warehouses/shops having combustible goods in that area which caused the fire to spread at a rapid pace, informed the local residents and shopkeepers. Also, the area is congested, which made dousing the fire even more difficult and it kept burning in several pockets till the next morning.
