A 19-year-old student of Manipal University was found dead near Jaipur’s Bagru area on Saturday evening, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances leading up to his death. Officials said the student may have been under significant mental stress following an incident during an examination earlier that day.
The student, Priyanshu Raj, was a first-year Computer Science undergraduate who had moved to Jaipur from Patna, Bihar, around six months ago. He had been residing in the university hostel and was preparing to clear a backlog paper from his first semester.
Exam Cheating Left Student Distressed
Police said Priyanshu appeared for a supplementary examination on December 26. During the test, invigilators allegedly found him using unauthorised notes, following which his answer sheet and materials were confiscated and replaced. Officers said the incident appeared to have deeply affected him.
Later that evening, Priyanshu left the college campus and travelled several kilometres away. Workers at an under-construction site in the Bagru area alerted authorities after an incident occurred there. He was rushed to the Bagru Community Health Centre, where doctors declared him dead.
During a search of the site, police recovered the student’s bag and mobile phone. Documents found inside helped confirm his identity. SHO Rajendra Kumar Godara said no suicide note was recovered, and further inquiry is ongoing.
Police Trace Student’s Movements Using CCTV
Investigators said Priyanshu had rented a scooter after leaving the campus. They are now reviewing CCTV footage and recording statements from classmates, hostel staff, and family members to reconstruct his movements and state of mind.
Family members later told police that Priyanshu had sounded disturbed during a phone call earlier in the day. After the college administration was alerted, the hostel warden reportedly spoke to him and attempted to reassure him that the academic issue would not impact his future.
Police said the case is being examined from all angles and that further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
