Iran Proposes Peace Deal to US Seeking Troop Withdrawal and Sanctions Relief

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iran’s latest peace proposal to the United States aims to halt hostilities across various fronts, including Lebanon, and calls for the withdrawal of US forces from regions adjacent to Iran. The plan also seeks reparations for the damages incurred during the US-Israeli war, as reported by state media on 19 May 2026.

According to Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, Tehran’s proposal includes the lifting of sanctions, the release of frozen financial assets, and an end to the US marine blockade affecting the country. These terms reportedly mirror Iran’s previous offer, which was dismissed by US President Donald Trump as “garbage” just a week earlier.

Trump indicated on Monday that he had paused plans for renewed attacks on Iran following the submission of the new peace proposal. He expressed optimism that a deal could be reached to restrict Iran’s nuclear programme, clarifying his position on social media that leaders from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates requested a delay in military action.

Current Negotiation Status

Negotiations between the two nations had been stagnant for a month, with no public disclosures of concessions from either side. However, a senior Iranian official mentioned that the US might be softening some of its demands. Reports suggest the US has agreed to release a quarter of Iran’s frozen assets, though Iran is advocating for the complete release of these funds.

Additionally, the US may be exhibiting flexibility regarding Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities under the monitoring of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Nonetheless, a US official, wishing to remain anonymous, refuted a claim by Iran’s Tasnim news agency regarding the waiving of oil sanctions during ongoing negotiations.

The ongoing conflict has already resulted in significant casualties, with thousands dead from US-Israeli bombardments before the ceasefire took effect in early April. Iran has retaliated against Israel and neighbouring Gulf states, leading to additional deaths and displacements. The ceasefire in Iran remains generally intact, yet drone strikes from Iraq towards Gulf countries have persisted, allegedly organised by Iran and its allies.

Historical Context and Future Outlook

The war initiated by Trump in late February aimed to undermine Iran’s support for regional militias, dismantle its nuclear infrastructure, and eliminate its missile capabilities. However, despite these military efforts, Iran has retained its stockpile of near-weapons-grade enriched uranium and its capability to threaten its neighbours with missile strikes and proxy warfare.

Iran’s clerical leadership faced significant challenges, particularly following severe uprisings earlier in the year, but has shown resilience against external pressures without visible organised opposition. The impact of these negotiations and military conflicts continues to evolve, shaping the geopolitical landscape of the region.

As discussions persist, analysts and observers remain vigilant regarding the potential outcomes and implications of these proceedings. The desire for a peaceful resolution and persistent conflicts could define the future trajectory of US-Iranian relations in the coming months.
