The CSR Journal Magazine

Punjab Kings registered their second win of IPL 2026 with a 5-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in Match 7 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, chasing down 210 to finish at 210/5 in 18.4 overs in a high-scoring contest.

CSK Post 209 Riding On Mhatre, Dube And Late Surge

Chennai Super Kings posted 209/5 in 20 overs after being put in to bat, with Ayush Mhatre leading the effort with 73 off 43 balls, including 6 fours and 5 sixes. After an early setback with Sanju Samson dismissed for 7, Mhatre stitched a crucial 96-run partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored 28 off 22.

The innings gained momentum through the middle overs, with Shivam Dube remaining unbeaten on 45 off 27 balls, providing stability and finishing strength. Sarfaraz Khan added a quick 32 off just 12 balls, accelerating the scoring in the death overs.

CSK collected 57 runs in the powerplay and maintained a strong run rate throughout, finishing at over 10 runs per over. However, despite posting 209, they were unable to capitalise on the total.

PBKS’ Explosive Start Sets Tone For Chase

Punjab Kings began their chase aggressively, led by Priyansh Arya, who scored 39 off just 11 balls, striking 3 fours and 4 sixes. His innings powered PBKS to 61/1 in just 4.2 overs, setting the tone for the chase.

Prabhsimran Singh contributed 43 off 34 balls, while Cooper Connolly added 36 off 22, ensuring the momentum was maintained. The partnerships kept PBKS ahead of the required rate despite occasional wickets.

Captain Shreyas Iyer anchored the middle phase with 50 off 29 balls, combining control with timely boundaries. Punjab reached 68 in the powerplay and continued to score freely against a CSK bowling attack that struggled to contain runs.

Iyer, Finishers Seal Second Win As CSK Remain Winless

Punjab Kings completed the chase in 18.4 overs, finishing at 210/5 with 8 balls to spare. After Iyer’s dismissal at 186/4, the match briefly opened up, but Shashank Singh (14 not out off 6) and Marcus Stoinis (9 not out off 3) closed out the game efficiently.

CSK’s bowlers struggled to control the scoring, with Matt Henry conceding 54 runs in 4 overs and Rahul Chahar going for 46 without a wicket. Anshul Kamboj picked up 2 wickets, but could not stem the flow of runs.

Iyer was named Player of the Match for his 50, which anchored the chase. The result gives Punjab Kings 4 points from two matches in IPL 2026, marking a strong start to their campaign.

Chennai Super Kings, meanwhile, remain winless after their opening matches this season and will need to address their bowling concerns after failing to defend a total of 209 at home.
