Indians Can Move to Germany Under ₹7,500 – Here’s How

The CSR Journal Magazine

Germany is rapidly becoming a top choice for Indians seeking to move to Europe. With a simple freelance visa application fee starting at just Rs 7,500, Indian professionals and entrepreneurs have a clear path to live and work in Germany legally, and eventually obtain permanent residency and citizenship.

Starting Your Journey: Freelance Visa from India

The most affordable route for Indians to move to Germany is via the freelance visa or Freiberufler visa. This visa lets self-employed professionals, consultants, artists, and freelancers live and operate legally in Germany. To apply from India, candidates must submit their application to the German consulate with valid documentation, including proof of freelance income or contracts demonstrating future work. The application fee is approximately ₹7,500 (about €90), and applicants must also show health insurance coverage, accommodation arrangements in Germany, and evidence of professional qualifications. The visa is initially granted for one to three years and can be renewed. Once in Germany, freelancers need to maintain sufficient income – usually around €1,200 to €1,500 (₹1 lakh to ₹1.3 lakh) monthly – and provide yearly tax declarations proving sustainable freelancing.

Proof of sustainable freelance income is essential to continue renewing the visa and eventually apply for permanent residency, which can be sought after three years of continuous residence on this visa.

Applying for Permanent Residency and Associated Costs

After three years of legal residence on a freelance visa, Indians can apply for permanent residency, formally called the Settlement Permit or Niederlassungserlaubnis. This permit allows indefinite stay, access to social security benefits, and permits family reunification. Applicants need to submit documents such as valid passports, current permits, proof of income and social security contributions, proof of accommodation, evidence of German language skills (usually level B1), and pass an integration test called the “Living in Germany” test.

The permanent residency application fee ranges from €113 to €147 (Rs 9,000 to Rs 12,000), depending on the applicant’s status. Additional costs include health insurance (mandatory and ranging from €320 to €600 monthly, or Rs 28,000 to Rs 53,000), German language courses (Rs 20,000 to Rs 1 lakh depending on level), and living expenses like rent and daily costs. Monthly rent varies widely but can be around €800–1,500 (Rs 75,000 to Rs 1.4 lakh) depending on the city.

Pathway to German Citizenship

Permanent residents can apply for German citizenship after eight years of continuous residence, which may reduce to seven years with completion of integration courses. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate financial independence, clean criminal records, proficiency in German (B1 or higher), and knowledge of German culture and law.

India’s law does not permit full dual citizenship, so those acquiring German citizenship usually renounce Indian citizenship. However, former Indian citizens can apply for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status which allows several lifetime benefits, including visa-free travel to India.

Investment-Based Residency Route

For Indians with significant capital, Germany also offers residency through business investment. Typically, this involves investing at least €250,000 (around Rs 2.3 crore) in establishing a business that creates jobs and contributes to the local economy. This route requires a detailed business plan and proof the venture will thrive. While it demands a larger upfront investment, it can offer faster routes to residency and citizenship depending on the success of the business.

This structured approach makes Germany a top destination for ambitious Indians hoping to establish themselves permanently in Europe.
